Two years ago, Coldplay dropped out of the sky with “Parachutes”. Now the band has almost reached a superstar status. Their second album, “A Rush Of Blood To The Head” has been out for a couple of months now, and Vorst Nationaal, the biggest concert venue in Brussels (Belgium), lay at their feet.
From the beginning of the gig, the audience reacted wild with joy over Coldplay and their songs. The young foursome, consisting of Chris Martin (lead singer, guitar and piano), Jon Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass) and Will Champion (drums), opened the set with the same song that opens “A Rush”, the heavy, but - almost contradictory - subtle “Politik”.
Subtlety is one of the keys to the band's music. Just think about the brilliant “Spies”, which was the reason “Parachutes” wasn't distributed in China (because of two supposedly politically loaded pieces of lyric). While each band member was shown on one of the four huge screens, the band steamed on with a lot of passion. Chris Martin, when not playing his piano, jumped around wildly.
The peak of their performance came with “Yellow”, which probably already has become a standard in a lot of karaoke machines. “Trouble” too, which initiated a spontaneous lighter moment, made the difference.
Still, the concert lacked the spark that would have made it really memorable. That spark was there at Werchter2002, Belgium's biggest rock festival. The band was on a natural high, then. They headlined successfully at Glastonbury the night before and were in an extremely good mood. Whoever saw Chris Martin then, could tell.
He connected with the festival audience in a very funny, relaxed way. He didn't do that in Vorst at all. If he said something, it was in French (while Belgian is - with Dutch - a bilingual country) and only reflected strictly on the songs. Thus the concert got kind of an aftertaste of routine, while it was only the first day in their European tour.
Coldplay have proven themselves as a live band in the past, but in Vorst we just weren't entirely blown away.
Twee jaar geleden kwam Coldplay met "Parachutes" plots uit de lucht vallen, ondertussen heeft de groep 'n halve supersterrenstatus bereikt. Hun tweede cd "A rush of blood to the head" is amper twee maanden uit en Vorst Nationaal lag uitverkocht aan hun voeten.
Vanaf het begin van de set reageerde het publiek uitzinnig op Coldplay en hun songs. Het jonge viertal, bestaande uit Chris Martin (zang, gitaar), Jon Buckman (gitaar), Guy Berryman (bas) en Will Champion (drum), opende net als op "A rush" de set met het stevige maar ook - bijna contradictorisch - subtiele "Politik". Subtiliteit is één van de handelsmerken van de band. Denk onder andere maar aan het geweldige "Spies", waardoor "Parachutes" in China - omwille van twee zogezegd politiek-getinte stukjes lyric - verboden werd. Terwijl ze op de achtergrond op vier schermen in beeld gebracht werden, stoomde Coldplay met veel overgave en een (wanneer hij niet aan zijn piano zat) wild in het rond springende Martin door hun set.
Hoogtepunt daarin was "Yellow", dat nu waarschijnlijk al in duizenden karoake-machines een standard in het genre is geworden. Ook "Trouble", dat voor een spontaan aansteker-moment zorgde, maakte het verschil.
Toch ontbrak die vonk waardoor het concert memorabel zou geworden zijn, een vonk die er op Werchter2002 duidelijk wel was. Toen verkeerde de band in een natural high. Ze hadden de avond ervoor succesvol Glastonburry geheadlined en waren daardoor bijzonder goed gemutst. Dat was toen zeker te merken aan Chris Martin, die op een losse, grappige manier contact zocht en vond met het festivalpubliek. Dat deed hij gisteren vooral niet.
Als Martin er al iets tussenflanste was het in het Frans en bleef wat hij zei strikt beperkt tot de song die ze zouden gaan spelen. Het concert kreeg daardoor een bandwerknasmaakje, terwijl het pas de eerste dag in hun Europese tournee was. Coldplay heeft al bewezen dat ze er ook live helemaal staan, maar in Vorst waren we er net niet kapot van.
