Yesterday I went to the BBC studios 2 hours before the beginning of the show. I was there with my boyfriend looking for tickets...Nobody had spare tickets so we waited in front of the gates for 2 hours till 8 pm.. Luckily someone didn't show up and a woman from the organization was so kind to give us 2 tickets!
Inside the studio it was very strange, there weren't big coldplay fans and we thought we were the only ones interested in coldplay! It was very cool looking at them while the other bands were performing.. Chris clapping hands and moving his head in rhythm with music.
They played 4 songs for the Friday show: Violet Hill, Lovers in Japan, 42, Viva la Vida.
They played Viva la Vida twice because Chris said he had lost his hearing. I was in a good position because behind their stage I saw Gwyneth watching them for the whole duration of the show. It was nice to see her singing and dancing during all their songs...during viva la vida she was singing all the Ooooo Oooooo
Then at 10 pm the live show started and they played Viva la Vida (for the 3rd time!) and Lost! Gwyneth was really enjoying lost! singing out and dancing. We weren't allowed to take pictures, my boyfriend only managed to take one with his phone.
(In this picture Gwyneth is between Guy's head and that white balloon).
At the end of the show we could get on their stage and talk with Chris (the others had already left). I was wearing the Viva la Vida shirt and he said "Hey! I like your T-shirt!", we also took a picture together.
It was cool looking closely at all their instruments, the piano and the painted drums... wow, it's been a great night!

Doors opened at 7pm and audiences were queuing up for Jools and other shows like Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Ready Steady Cook.
The audience was let in at 8pm to the studio - it looks different from how you see it on the telly - kind of smaller. It’s open plan with a band on each side and in each corner of the room. Coldplay were set up on the opposite side from where I was standing, which was great for sound. If you were behind a band, you couldn’t hear them properly. As us folks were wearing black (we were asked to wear dark colours), they put us in a separate section - to add to the ‘ambiance’.
All the artists, including Coldplay, arrived at the same time on set and were just milling around. There was a warm up guy who was cracking jokes (some funny, some not). Chris clapped at one of his jokes and he got a thank you as he was the only one who bothered. I could see Phil sitting on the right side at one of the tables near the band, but he was too far away for me to wave. Then Mr Jools Holland arrived and they started to let us know how things were going to be run. They were taping the show that goes out this Friday first and then we were going to be live at 10pm.
Other artists who were there were Cage The Elephant [who I've been meaning to see live all year and have missed them twice!]. I was so glad they were on the bill and not the Hold Steady, which was the band advertised. ‘In One Ear’ is a tune and I love it’s groovy bassline. Also there was SIA from Australia, who were absolutely brilliant! They played a song whilst wearing these weird skeleton suits, kinda of in a Mighty Boosh stylee in day-glo colours, which lit up in the dark, when they turned the lights down. It looked wicked [it looks even more wicked on telly]. The lead singer has a killer voice and I definitely want to see them live again. They also played another song where her hands were painted blue and she sign-languaged the lyrics as she was singing. A very interesting and unique band.
The ‘legend’ that is Glen Campbell performed some covers from his new album. He played the Foo Fighter’s ‘Times Like These’ and Green Day’s ‘Time of Your Life’. Because he was old, they had two teleprompters in front of him, in case he forgot the lyrics. It was kind of like watching him perform karaoke - it was quite painful. Also, I think he completely desecrated two of the most wonderful contemporary songs that are out there. I was not impressed…
Jools caught up with him at the piano and they had a chat a bit later on. Jools wanted to jam with him and they couldn’t make up their mind which song to play and were taking friggin ages. They opted for ‘William Tell’, which if you don’t know it, moves at quite a pace and Glen Campbell was having trouble keeping up on guitar. You could hear a weird reverb which kind of spoilt it. Whether they’ll air that on Friday remains to be seen. It was a bit crap…
Amy Le Vier was lovely. We had a bit of a chat whilst things were being set up. She was quite nervous and I was giving her lots of encouragement. She’s from Memphis, Tennessee and she’s currently touring with the actual ‘legend’ that is Seasick Steve [lucky girl]. I will definitely go and check her out again. Her lead guitarist was cool. He could really play and her drummer was sick too. She got to perform two songs, the second of which had a lovely tango beat midway through that I was rockin’ too, hopefully, will air on Friday.
Mick Fleetwood formerly of Fleetwood Mac [didn't know they weren't together no more...] was interviewed by Jools and had some particular words of wisdom regarding the industry. I could see Chris and the others sitting there, listening intently. Coldplay did give good attention to all the other performers [inbetween getting their makeup touched up LOL!] Also another guy did one song solo on acoustic guitar, but I’ll be dammed if I can remember his name. He was alright.
Onto Coldplay. I was jazzed to see the guys in all their finery getting into the swing of things. At the beginning of each ‘Later’ show they have all the bands playing a riff together, which alternates between chords ‘A’ and ‘F# minor’ [so if you ever want to jam along yourself, you know the chords now LOL!]. The first song we got from Coldplay was ‘Violet Hill’ which was great and a good, solid start to proceedings. ‘Lovers in Japan’ was wonderful! Their part of the set was littered with coloured butterfly confetti on the floor and also there were bunches of balloons that had butterflies on them. It looked sweet. Next they played ‘42′, which always gets me going, it’s truely awesome.
They played ‘Viva La Vida’ and Chris sang the wrong lyrics towards the end and decided to stop and they did it again. I don’t think anyone would have noticed really [except, me LOL!], but I guess it bugged Chris that he sang it wrong and he wanted to start over. He did make a bit of lame excuse saying ‘he couldn’t hear properly’, but that was bull LOL!!!!
Oh yeah, we weren’t allow to film/take photos [hiss! boo! LOL!] and the noise level during the first taping was quite quiet, which I thought was a bit strange, but when they went live it was totally different. You could feel the shift in energy in the room. Everyone was up for it - the audience and the bands and it was such a great feeling. There was definitely more animation from everyone concerned and it made a real difference.
Coldplay went live with ‘Viva La Vida’ as the first song and then ‘Lost’ was the second song at the end of the 30 mins. Chris and Guy were interviewed by Jools Holland, I was gutted I was on the other side of the room for that! Chris was a bit hyper and when Jools asked him why he thought ‘Viva La Vida’ was so successful he pointed at Guy [who looked really bashful on the telly playback - awwwww]. Jools said it was because they have boobies on the album cover. Chris kept saying ‘boobies’ over and over LOL! Chris presented Jools with a 1 billion Zimbabwean note, which he got off his auntie. Jools also mocked Chris about the state of his piano, how the white keys were black and vice versa, which I didn’t even realise. God, must be confusing to play, but I guess not for Chris…LOL!
I was wondering throughout when they were gonna play ‘Lost’, considering it’s their next single, so when they started to play it, I was really amped. I know, I keep going on about it, but it really is my favourite favourite song off the album. And what happens?? Chris ballsed it up at the end, by talking and then promptly forgot which chord came next. That really annoyed me. Everything was going so well until that point. Every band brought their A-game to the table and executed faultless performances, but Chrissy had to go and spoil it by being faceceous. I mean, it doesn’t sound too bad on the playback, but at that moment in time I felt really disappointed.
So, the setlist was: Violet Hill/Lovers in Japan/42/Viva La Vida/Lost!
Afterwards when taping was over, the band were there for a bit, but then left. I was speaking with Amy Le Vier so didn’t see when they went. I did manage to sneak onto the studio floor and got to said hi to Phil, who was still there chatting away. I did express my annoyance about Chris and I said ‘give him an oops up side da head from me for that!’. Phil went and got me a bunch of balloons that I had been coveting all evening [thank you kindly :)].
[thanks WF]
