Review
So Robert and I went to Oslo to see Coldplay last Friday. My expectations were way up there, as I had seen their show at the same venue (Rockefeller) in December 2000 and the band enjoyed that show so much they released a live EP from it.
They didn't have an opening band, instead the audience got to watch the One Giant Leap film, where Michael Stipe contributes vocals to the song "The way you dream". I had never seen the video for that song before, and even if I don't like the song it was great to see how immersed Michael looked while singing.
Onto the show:
We were in the second row, centre, which means right in front of Chris Martin. The venue is rather small and intimate and we could easily see the setlist he had in front of him. I regret looking at it because a big part of going to a live concert is trying to figure out which song they're playing the intro to. But they played almost all my favorite songs, including Spies which was amazing of course. I would have liked to hear Bigger Stronger but I guess they didn't have room for it in their 17 song set.
The audience was awesome, they were really into all the songs from Parachutes, even the ones that weren't released as singles. Chris Martin looked amazed and just let the audience sing by themselves a few times...
The band opened with new track Politik, Its a great song that i had only heard a few days ago from the copenhagen show, i can't wait to hear it on the new album, they then went onto Shiver & Spies before another new track(Daylight) was introduced, by the time the next song came along (Trouble) the crowd was going crazy, everyone was singing along.
One I Love (not the REM song) came next, Chris changed to the Rickenbacker for this song and went totally crazy throughout, its got to be the next single, such a great song, a new intro was played for Don't Panic, again the crowd was well into it, Everything Not Lost & See You Soon followed, until what I think was the best song of the night, God Put A Smile Upon Your Face.
As you can imagine the roof lifted when yellow started, everyone was singing along, the crowd even finishing the song as Chris turned the mike on us
Chris told how his grandmother had passed away that day, he then dedicated the one of the tracks to her (The Scientist).
The band went off for a break before the encore, Chris looked unhappy at one of the roadie's, there was some kind of technical problems going on, but the crowd didn't notice, everything sounded great,
The band came back and played 2 more tracks (Clocks & In My Place) from the forthcoming album, Chris announced that the band would be going for a break and they would come back for a special Norwegian party.
I really have to say that 'In My Place' was totally mindblowing. The single hasn't been released yet, but it's been available on the Coldplay site for a while. It is absolutely gorgeous, and it was amazing to see how many people got totally carried away during this.
So after the last song on the setlist, which was 'Life is for living', performed by Chris alone, he came back onstage and we didn't know what to expect.
Some explaination is needed before I go on: When Coldplay was here back in 2000, they introduced Everything's Not Lost with "this song is called Hunting High and Low" which is a semi-famous song by the Norwegian band A-Ha.
So Chris sits down by the piano and starts singing Hunting High and Low; that was hilarious, at least for us who got the joke.
Then the rest of the band came onstage and they started a really catchy kick-ass song which I didn't know called Lips like sugar. After the band went off, Robert managed to get Chris Martins setlist.
I was a bit exhausted after the show, it was very hot and crowded and Robert and I decided to grab a Cola (yeah, really) sit down and watch the roadies unplug and put away all the equipment.
I asked one of the roadies for a guitar pick as i had seen him leaving some on the mic stand, he then give us aftershow passes also, so we waited in this area that was seperated from the roadies, 3 members of the band made their way over beside us.
The first to appear was the bass player (Guy Berryman), he was really nice and stopped to talk awhile, he signed some cds and the setlist, Stine asked him about the last song that was played, he told us it was a cover of an Echo & The Bunnymen track, neither of us had heard it before.
The guitarist (Johnny Buckland) then appeared, he also stopped to signed some things.
Chris was the last to appear, Stine told him thanks for a great show, he signed the cd's and setlist also, he told us that he thought the show wasn't good because of the technical problems, it didn't show during the show because he was on fine form.
