Fan Reviews

Hey everyone,

I’ll start from the beginning.

I got to abbey road at 11.30 and there was no one there apart from some tourists taking pictures and walking across the zebra crossing. Waited for about an hour and still no one had turned up so I went into the reception and was told to leave because I wasn’t authorised to be there. Things were not looking hopeful. A few people turned up a bit later including some obvious ebayers (those who get pictures signed to sell on ebay, not for their own pleasure!) and at about 4.30 a succession of mercedes came into abbey road at 5 minute intervals. First was will and he came over to the gates and signed for everyone and shook hands etc! Then Guy arrived and he did the same and both were lovely. Then Jonny arrived (my hero!) and I know you’re not gona believe this but I met him randomly in camden about a month ago (at which point I declared my love for him) so when he came up to us at abbey road he said hi to me and how are u?!?!?! I couldn’t believe it and so I asked him if he recognised me and he said “yeh, from Camden” and then asked my full name. I know it sounds ridiculous but I have proof from the people who were there! Chris arrived 5 minutes later but went straight in . Rumour has it that he was ambushed by paparazzi outside his house so wasn’t in the mood.

Ok so by this point more and more people started turning up and these women began checking people’s confirmation emails and checking their IDs and giving them tickets. I felt so gutted cos they said to me there was no point hanging around because there were absolutely no tickets spare and that the event had be oversubscribed so there wouldn’t be any room. But I stayed anyway because it was worth it on the off chance. At 6.45, the doors opened and the friends id made at the front of the queue all went in and I was left outside . By 7.30 everyone was in except for the VIPs and some late comers. My overall conclusion of the people that had gone in was very poor! They didn’t know anything bout coldplay which made me really mad because the real fans like us on this message board weren’t getting a chance to go and we’d appreciate it so much more. I think my point was proved when Tara Palmer Thompkinson turned up. (for all of you who aren’t English – she’s the Paris Hilton of the UK).

At this point I was getting desperate and I begged the women with the tickets to let me in. Matt McGinn (Jonny’s roadie) came out to let his girlfriend in so I asked him if he could get me in. He said he’d try his best but couldn’t promise anything. He came back and said he couldn’t get anyone else in! Gutted! Finally one of the women in charge came up to me and said that she’d try and get me in subtly cos didn’t want to piss off the organisers and by this point about 5 other non ticket holders had turned up too (theyd been there about 2 hours). 15 minutes came and went and I was so worried because it didn’t look like it was going to happen but then suddenly the guy on the door said ok “two at a time and make it quick” to us so we went up the steps of abbey road the down stairs into what I think was studio 2 but not sure. Oh My God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The gig was about to start and adrenaline just made me push my way to the front and nobody seemed to mind. Id say only about 250 people were there. I honestly could’ve touched jonnys pedals I was that close! They came on bout 2 mins after I got there so we’d really left it late getting in! Ok I’l try to remember the best and funniest bits of the gig.

The boys seemed to appreciate there were a lot of crap celebrities there and in Poltik Chris sang “Look at earth from outer space, so may big brother celebrities in this place”.

Chris was in such a funny mood and kept dedicating songs to a woman called Lynn who id queued with at the beginning. She was there with her son and chris kept calling her a yummy mummy!

Chris swore loads so was worried the songs wouldn’t be allowed on radio and he kept making references about kanye west (who had just arrived) and how cool he is.

They were told that theyd have to re record yellow or politik for radio cos the versions they did earlier in the set weren’t ok but they refused and did In my Place instead. What a bonus!

Chris’ piano stopped working in Fix You so they had to start again and he sang a different melody in the verse which was cool.

It was over so quickly which was sad but the best moment of my life without doubt! I just can’t get over how close they were!

Anyway sorry that was so long but thought id tell u every detail. Anything else you want to know then just ask.

The celebrities that were there : Tara Palmer Thomkinson, Michael and Emily Eavis, Jamie Cullum, Kanye West, Chris Evans, Chief exec EMI, Paul Gambaccini.

Oh and btw, cameras and recording equipment were not allowed in although there was an official photographer and I got some on my phone too which I’ll post up with the set list soon!

[Thanks jonnybucklandhasnicehats]

Well, just got back and it was as good as you’d expect. It was like a mini concert, we were allowed in about 6.30 and went straight to the studio, I think it was studio 2, not that big, and there were about 350-400 people there. Nearly all competition winners I think , there were a few celebs there too, Jamie Cullum, Paul Gambicinni , the Pub Landlord (cant remember his name), bloke from the Sun, it was all standing, dim lights, dried ice effect, then Dermot O’Leary came and introduced them - their set was Square One, Politik, Yellow, White Shadows, Swallowed in the Sea, Clocks, Dont Panic, The Hardest Part, Talk, In my Place and Fix You., - not the exact order but nearly right. Chris talked quite a lot, as usual, and seemed really up beat. It was a really great atmosphere the crowd were enthusiastic, and it finished too soon. It started at 7.45 and finished about 9.05 and then they were gone… The only annoying thing was that you werent allowed to take any pictures and I had gone and bought a digital camera just for this, there were notices everywhere and even when we got our phones out a man came from nowhere and told us to put them away.. so no pictures to take home and no signing autographs or anything which was disappointing. but apparently they are rehearsing for the Brits so got a quick get away so I do forgive them but if we could have taken pictures at the end that would have been good, apparently they filmed it as well for a programme about Abbey Road Studios to be shown next year but Lyn (Doormouse) knows more about that, and he actually spoke to her.

[Thanks ValW]

We took the tube and arrived around 6.25, there was already a really big queue outside. We got our tickets (won off radio 2) and luckily they'd just started going in, so we didn't have to wait outside for long. We went down into the studio (studio 2...i think..not sure), there weren't many people there at that time, maybe about a hundred. We stood pretty close to the stage (with a couple of people in front), but we managed to get right in the middle (where chris would be).

We had to wait over an hour, i wouldn't move because i didn't want to lose our place, but it was definately worth it.

They came on about 7.46, announced by Dermot O'leary. They all looked really good up close (especially Guy). I couldn't believe how close i was to Chris...about 4ft away!! They started with square one, which was pretty amazing, then they went on to play a good set (including Politik, yellow,The hardest part, 'til kingdom come, in my place and others...). (bit disappointed they didn't play the scientist though...it's my favourite song). They did however play fix you twice (well almost....), the piano keys got stuck together, probably from the heat, and he couldn't play the rest of the it. Chris was sweating buckets, but it was pretty hot in there. At the end a lady (he'd been *flirting* with) managed to get his sweaty towel (ewww....).

It was a shame we couldn't take photos, but understandable i guess. There was a very large guy telling people not to. The guy in front of me managed to sneakily get his digital out and take a few...which looked really good. I was really sad when it finished, because it seemed so short. As amazing as it was for some reason I'd still have to say Earl's court was my favourite coldplay gig because it was the first time i'd seen them. they played more songs, and the large crowd just gave a better atmosphere. Still nothing beats seeing them up close, and i'm sure it was a once in a lifetime opportunity that i'll never forget!!...Thankyou radio 2.

Media Reviews

"Crikey," spluttered Coldplay singer Chris Martin. "We usually play to more people at our soundchecks." . Right now, Coldplay are the biggest band on earth. Their third album, X And Y, topped the charts in the United States as well as Britain and their mammoth tour in support of it is not scheduled to finish until June.

Last night's intimate, full-length set (to be broadcast on Radio 2 on 8 April) was their last British sighting for the foreseeable future. Rapper Kanye West (namechecked in Politik's re-modelled lyrics), and jazzer Jamie Cullum to DJ Chris Evans and queen of the musicals Elaine Paige were sprinkled among the competition winners to see what was effectively a stadium show in a living room.

Far from the troubled distracted figure of Coldplay's recent Earls Court stint, Martin was in sweary, engagingly gregarious mood, flirting with a woman in the front row; stopping Don't Panic to confess that his tale that it was inspired by his brother wearing a pink tuxedo in Devon was a fib and apologising for sweating like the proverbial pig.

Martin even had a chuckle at himself when introducing his mother: "If she hadn't let my dad have his wicked way with her, the world of ballads would be very different today..."

Musically, they were as honed as a touring machine should be, guiding the complex Politik from its tub-thumping punk introduction to its climax as an avant-garde ballad and giving the formerly slender Yellow a meaty, more rocky makeover.

Jonny Buckland's work in recreating Kraftwerk's Computer Love on the mesmerising Talk confirmed that he is the finest guitarist of his generation, but while Martin was the undoubted star - and he revelled in pulling all the rock shapes he can muster on White Shadows - as a live experience Coldplay were most certainly a collective. In fact, they were almost a gang. They gelled in spectacular fashion on Clocks.

Towards the end, Martin leant back off his piano stool so his head almost touched the stage (the yoga must be coming on a treat) as his three colleagues created a swirling sound collage around him. Then, in one swift movement, he righted himself and joined in. Moments later, as they went full pelt, the foursome stopped the song dead. This was thrilling musical gymnastics of the highest order.

They finished with the grandstanding Fix You, which had to be restarted when Martin's piano malfunctioned. The hiccup scarcely mattered, for the song exuded balm and by the time it reached its "tears stream down your face" coda many were joining in with the act as well as the words.

A world-class set from a world-class band.

Superstars watch Coldplay at Abbey Road show

Coldplay were watched by Kanye West and Glastonbury boss Michael Eavis at their only scheduled UK appearance of the year last night (February 13).

The band performed at the world famous Abbey Road Studios in London at a show that was recorded for BBC Radio 2.

The gig was watched by Glastonbury boss Michael Eavis, who Martin namechecked from the stage, describing him as a “God”, as well as Jamie Cullum and rapper Kanye West.

West, who was in the same studio working on new material, watched the last half of the show from the back of the room, and grinned when Martin noticed him.

However, the Coldplay singer was left embarrassed after his organ broke during final song ’Fix You’.

“What would Kanye do?” he joked. “He’d get on with the song and try again.”

The set was:

  • ‘Square One’
  • ‘Politik’
  • ‘Yellow’
  • ‘White Shadows’
  • ‘Swallowed In The Sea’
  • ‘How You See The World Part 2’
  • ‘Don't Panic’
  • ‘Clocks’
  • ‘Talk’
  • ‘Till Kingdom Come’
  • ‘The Hardest Part’
  • ‘In My Place’
  • ‘Fix You’

The show will be broadcast in April to coincide with the release of the band’s next single, ’The Hardest Part’.
