Reviews

They might be known as the mild men of rock, but Coldplay just about took the roof off a packed Asiaworld Arena on their debut appearance in Hong Kong last night.

In front of an expectant crowd, lead singer Chris Martin leapt - literally - into action with a blistering take on Square One, from last year's X&Y album.

This was quickly followed by a pulsating, strobe-lit rendition of Politik, from 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head, before Martin picked up a guitar to play the band's breakthrough hit, Yellow, from the 2000 debut, Parachutes.

An impressive number was highlighted by the appearance of large yellow balloons, which bounced around the audience before bursting to release starbursts of gold confetti into the air.

Coldplay's image as the caring face of rock was then reiterated by a bizarre moment in which Martin read out an announcement asking fans not to stand in the aisles.

Apparently, this constituted a fire hazard, but it begged the question why the organisers bother filling the arena with seats at all; if they had been giving refunds for non-use of seats, everyone would have got their money back.

Getting back to what they do best, the band ploughed through the cream of their back catalogue for just under 90 minutes, with the highlights including Clocks, Talk, In My Place and The Scientist, the last of which struck a particularly resonant chord with the crowd.

A superb stage show enhanced the performance greatly, with a giant oblong screen, lights, smoke machines and lasers being used to expert effect.

Martin also seemed to make a genuine connection with the crowd, even running the length of the arena at one point to embrace fans at the back.

Saving the best for last, Coldplay bowed out with Fix You, 13,000 voices singing the final chorus - unaccompanied and in unison - making for the most special moment of a truly special gig.

After work, i go to watch Coldplay live. This is the first time Coldplay go to Hong Kong. Half of the audience are foreigners, even though the remain are Hong Kongers, many of them are speaking in English. I am seem to be in foreign country when i get in the Expo. Eric and I drink a king size beer before the show, the beer is needed 50 bucks but who care, i want to get higher!

When the lights are off, all guys stand up and scream, when the band members come out, oh! it’s great. They play Square One as a beginning, and then a lot of hit songs, such as Yellow, Politk, etc. It’s high to me. I think they are considered, they are not only play the third album, but also the 1st and 2nd. We can listen all the hits!

When they have played few song, Chris Martin receive a notice that we need to get back to our seats. But Chris doesn’t care about it!

At half of the show, Chris talks about his funny thing when they arrived HK yesterday, when they when to Deep Water Bay, Chris noticed that the bathing room of the beach is not allowed to take video or photo, but he did it! When they play, Chris jams the lyric about this happen in the song, he is a funny guy!

I think Chris is really supporting “Make Trade Fair”! Later on, Chris go down the stage and run to the back of the Expo, he wants to get closer woth the audience who are in the back! “No matter how much you pay, if you watch Coldplay, you would have a chance to get closer with Chris’s face.”

At the encore part, they play “In my place” and “Fix you” to end up the show! Those songs are so touching and give us climax.

This is the unforgettable show and one of important events in my life. I hope more and more my favourites would visit HK.

The Twisted Logic Tour in HK was tonight (13 July 2006)

I must say it was soooo badly organized. I was sitting in the bowl area (far far back) with my friends. btw it was HK$580 a ticket. The concert started at around 9 pm which was supposed to start at 8 pm. Everyone, esp in the bowl area, stood up on the chair. (if everyone stands why would we need a chair?!)

I am short, even if I stood, I could see nothing. The only thing I saw was one of the group member’s forehead (oh well, I can’t see who he was actually)

There was a big screen behind them, but Coldplay was not shown on the screen AT ALL. What was the point of having a big screen?

I was so frustrated, so as some other people. Many of us left after an hour because we would see NOTHING. This is the first time I wanted to leave in a concert. I really wanted to see how good Coldplay in live is, but it did not allow me to do that.

yea, people should stand

here is my review tonight^^

yea, just return from the show as well it is my first time to see them, amazing night I rush to the stage left side, a close up look of chris and johnny unbelievable, Chris voice is very great in this show and he is so nice to encourage us to sing and being funny to tell us his special touring in hk he even knows kowloon, which surprises me so much, hey~ lots and lots of lyrics changes to fit us, and it sound so perfect and funny and personally their respect to johnny cash touches me I can feel their passion in the song ring of fire

though honestly HK is not the most suitable place with great atmosphere it didn’t affect coldplay, especailly chris’s performance Will play brillant drum~ different from the show I heard

as for the melody, it is all alike with the previous show except I can hear sight difference in the song talk, with Guy’s bass line added and trouble is a blessing, really, so beautiful

and lastly and lastly” and also this crazily drive me crazy~~ hehe when in the song fix you, I was so much so much in it, and raise my hand just like worshiping, and chris spots me and smile, I can 100% sure, it perhaps there ain’t much die-hard singing with us around me, thus i strangely stand out^^

why I am so sure is that when the show end he walks into the direction facing me and threw me the artwork in his fingers, actually just a ring of color paper and now I am touching it

blessing and unbelievable, I look forward so much to you guys’ review, by the way, I am hongkonger

[Thanks Start]

I have just returned from the Hong Kong show… man oh man, what an experience.

I will never forget it. Probably the best live show I have ever seen - and Chris, what an entertainer!! I took some pics (but a bit out of focus since taken from my phone) and recorded “Til Kingdom Come” on my phone as well but was special in that Chris told a story about what happened to him yesterday when he went to Deep Water Bay (one of the beaches here in HK).

He makes references of that experience in the song as well - I will try and get this downloaded to some format. I don’t know how to do any of this, so if anyone can help me, it would be appreciated. I will post a review very soon. Amazing night!!

It's 24 hours after the gig but it seems i'm still in the excited mode! The snail-speed bus took us like TWO hours from Tin Hau to the arena at the airport and we were 45 minutes late, lucky that the show started soon after we arrived, or i'm sure i'll be nervously jumping up and down and screaming , having already been longing for such a show since the release of their first songs!

The arena was fully packed with happy people when we arrived. But everybody left their seats when it finally blaked out and Coldplay came up on stage -- to stand up, cheer and sing and dance along! I can't believe people in Hong Kong could be so high. The show started with a countdown on the giant screen, Chris silhouetted himself on it while singing "Square One", so 'ying bao'. Another amazing moment came when they played "Yellow". Giant yellow balls were released and bounced amoung audiences. Beautiful golden strips eventually bursted out of them under the warm and lovely lights, and the atmosphere was so happy and touching.

The set effects earned a great great credit to the show, with energetic laser lights, those fabulous projections on the massive screen, and the mysteriously alluring spotlight on Chris while he "jerked" the piano chair. But the poor quality sound system is one big flaw i cannot fogive, that's very unfair to have the great rock band sing on the sound system of a school hall!

If frontman Chris was just an average man, his funny, uncontrolled dance moves, the way he bends down to touch the keyboard with his head, plays with the suspended lamp, rolls on the floor while singing, and his far too simple dress-up would earn him the title -- a nerd. But it was his sheer confidence, uncomparable style and talent which were so irresistably magnetic that it made him a very cool rock star of a favourite band! Yet with the fans, he was not "cool" at all. In a bizzare moment, the caring band pursuaded the audiences not to stand on asiels. Apparently it was out of the concern for a fire hazard, although no one really cared as we all wanted a closer look at the stage. Chris even decided to run the full length of the arena to hug and sing to the fans at the back, head-set and mics all on. It's a scene I believe would never happen in other gigs other than Coldplay's. They don't care if the host city is important to their career and fame or not, they did the same everywhere to win their fans' hearts (by mentioning in Hong Kong about how they broke a law in Deep Water Bay and changing some of their lyrics to fit the locals). I think they deserve much more vigour in the applause and "WOoo" the Hong Kongers gave them. They are true musicians singing with their hearts, true entaintainers who play in a united voice with their best pals, and true innovators of origional ideas and style..

I spent 2+1 hours on traffic and $580 on tickets for a 90 mins gig. Yes it's costly, I would do that only for Coldplay!

Keep rocking Coldplay, we're all okay!

[Thanks jen]

Have been a Coldplay fan for a number of years and looked forward to seeing them live as the oportunity is quite rare....ticket price wasnt too bad by todays standards HK$580 and i expected and promised my g/f a good evenings entertainment.

Published start time was 8,00....we waited until 8,45. No appology or explanation. Visual effects were on the whole good, but very few close-ups of the band which meant anyone more than 50' away couldn't see much. "Luckily" we didn't buy the expensive tickets, my g/f is only 5'4" and wouldn't have seen anything. A camera at the back appeared not to be working at the start, having fallen off its support, and even after it was fixed it's pictures weren't being fed onto the screens.

Some people from the floor area were leaving after 45 mins, unable to see as everyonewas by now standing on their chairs. The set was good, mixture of hits and songs from X & Y, Chris in excellent form, sound was great. Then it was over. "Is that it?" asked my g/f "It would appear so" i replied"...Why such a short concert?

Just 1 hour 20 mins and without a support band the evenings entertainment was over by 10,00. Fortunately we live in HK so only had an hour or so travel home, but for fans travelling from further away, this must have been a disapointment. I am 42 years old, have always been a fan of live music from many different genre and been attending concerts since i was 15 years old, but this is the first time i have come away feeling let down wanting to complain.

Undeniably, coldplay’s twisted logic concert in Hong Kong was the best concert I have ever been to. The band’s performance was spectacular. and were not let down by the crap singing of Hong Kong people (I realized this while browsing through youtube clips).

However, a few minor problems of the show would be the 60 minute delay with no overtime or anything that would get our time back. The ticket printed “20:00 – 10:05”, the show started at 21:00 and ended at around 22:30. Also, most of the audiences were not participating. My friends and I were singing n enjoyin ourselves during the scientist but were quickly unmotivated because we were the only ones singing in the crowd.

Nevertheless, coldplay’s performance was amazing and I am glad that they were not let down by the crap singing of Hong Kong people (realized this when browsing through coldplay youtube videos).

The Coldplay concert rocked, no question about it.
