On Saturday night I saw Coldplay in Osaka. I was pumped for this concert--really pumped. It was my first big-venue concert, with an estimated 20,000 people packing the house to see Coldplay do their stuff. At the end of the night though, it turned out to be a bummer of a concert--especially at $70 a ticket. They only played for one hour and twenty minutes. I thought that was unacceptable. At that kind of money, and with that many people in attendence, any concert should be at least 2 hours. Their first set was only 10-12 songs, and then they came on for one encore. That was it. I felt like i was just getting warmed up when they ended the show. Everyone stood around afterwards kind of wondering if that could really be the end.
Now, I don't want to sound too disapointed. I mean, the band played a good show. The lightshow was impressive. The songs sounded exactly like they did on CD. But maybe that was the problem. It felt a little too perfect, too practiced, and too rushed. I went with my friend Frazer, and afterwards we talked about why we were feeling like it was a dud concert. One thought was that Coldplay doesn't really sing about anything important. Their lyrics are rather absract and feel-goody. So even though they had a big light show, and played to 20,000 people, I was drastically more impressed by Ben Harper who sang to a smaller crowd, but sang of things of importance.
I suppose the concert made me see that rock stars are just humans. I saw through the faces of the band members to see that they were tired, and wondering how all those Japanese people could like their music when they don't even understand the words. I realized that even rock stars can let people down--and that made them a lot more human.
