what an amazing concert!!! I got home like 30 mins ago... There was so much traffic but very worth it!!! I took a lot of pics and videos... I will post them up later!!!!!!!!

btw for those that were in the pit... I wonder if you saw a girl with a neon orange poster.. haha if so that was me!!!!

it was the best feeling having them looking at me awwwwww!!!

[coldplay#1]

I just got back. Getting out of that parking lot was ridiculous!!!! there were only a few ways out of it. It took us an hour to get out, and most of the time we were sat with our car off. One plus side... a guy came around asking us to play "How many people can we fit in a Toyota Prius?" The answer was 15, but we would have done more if it wasn't for the people on the bottom in pain.

The show was great. I was in section 302. The view was pretty good, and it wasn't as far away as i thought it might be. Best song of the night: Lovers in Japan. It's just so great live. The B-stage tonight was behind the 100's section... not on one of the ramps. Have they been doing this recently?

Got home from this show a little while ago. SO GOOD!!! Everything was beautiful, as usual. At the end of the show, the girl two seats over from me turned to me and said, "Wow! You knew EVERY word to EVERY song!" I don't get why you'd pay over $100 to see a band when you [i]don't[i] know every word to every song and they haven't been your favorite band going on 9 years now. Sometimes it's hard when your favorite band in the world also happens to be one of the biggest bands in the world.

The concert ended hours ago and I am still on a high from it!I got to the venue at noon and lined up, there were about 10 people in front of me. I ended up being in the front row toward the left. I still can't believe I was that close I just can't even describe what that felt like. I got a bunch of great pictures and video but cannot post them until I get back home to Vegas next week. So more to come...

The show was AWESOME, as usual. But this time I got to spend it being in the front row...6and a half hours was so so worth it Being in the front and having Coldplay right in front of you was the best! Words cant even describe how happy and amazing it was to see my favorite band up close like that. Definitely the best day of my life The band was so full of energy and it spread through the entire audience, it was great! I met some coldplayers there and they had pit tix so we stood next to each other. At the end I got a set list from this camera guy My voice is pretty much non exsistant and my face and neck are pretty sun burned...but hey, anything for Coldplay!

[Jsalyers]

Pit, front row was amazing! Got to meet the lovely Joe, as well as Erick, who had an awesome "Chris Martin" jacket! Coolest Coldplayers!

Sang every single song and LiJ was Amaaaazzziiiing. The girl next to me got Will's mallot thing he uses to play VLV and I got to touch it. So cool. Guy saw my shirt! Haha, overall, what a great night!

[hera_g89]

what a night to remember. got to the venue like 5 hours early. joe saved me a spot. my first coldplay luck of the day, well sort of . the oxfam lady i forgot her name saw me wearing a make trade fair shirt. and was like that is an old shirt. come by later and i'll give you a new one. so i was set on meeting her later. anyways so we get in the venue and run for it. and we were front row right on jonny's side in the pit. along with lina and joe. who are awesome! then as i'm waiting to my surprise the oxfam lady comes and finds me and is "i knew you would be in the pit. i didn't bother looking in the seats. can i take a pic of you for the oxfam twitter." lol so i guess i'm on the twitter for oxfam. the opening acts were great! coldplay came on and it was amazing! i can't even describe how great it was. anyways so i was waving my shirt that the lady gave me and says MTF and a big green = sign and chris saw me and waved at me! i couldn't believe it. i was also right next to camera guy and after i heard that girl got the mallet i was like you have to give me something! and he was like ok ok relax. i think i annoyed him but oh well. so he hands me a setlist but the guy next to me tried to take it so a bit of it is ripped but you can still see all the songs on it! and he gave me friend one. my friend got a jonny's setlist! overall great show. best night of my life.

edit: and i saw phil at the beginning. i'm kicking myself for not calling out his name!

[gotcheese2768]

the concert was SPECTACULAR!!!!! whoever is in charge of the lights is a genius. all effects were incredible. i actually like some songs even better after hearing them live! and i have to say, one of my favorite parts was the bille jean cover!! the whole crowd screaming michael jackson's added shouts... sooo fun!!!

it was my first concert and i'm glad it was coldplay. =) simply unforgettable.

I just got back from SD a few hours ago and my right ear hasn't popped yet from the plane ride, so i'm deaf in one ear as I write this and somewhat miserable, but here goes...

First, i spotted Jackie, Kelly and Geoff and said hello and they said hello back, i even got a smile from Kelly. I totally impressed my friend who was with me by the fact that I knew who they were and she didn't

Some guy brought a 6-9 month old baby to the show I'm all for young people being introduced to Coldplay, but whatevah!

The crowd turned hot and cold. During the uptempo familiar songs, they all came alive and were standing, especially during VLV, but for the slower or unfamiliar songs, like GOW or THP, PFFA they all sat back down, i was livid and mortified I swear I wanted to strangle them As for the guy to the right of me, we were feeding off each other's energy. When I clapped, sang, screamed, jumped, danced and ohhh ohhh'd, he would mirror me and vice versa. We even tried, but failed to get a Viva chant going during the remix, his girlfriend high-fived me for the effort!

The Mexican cell phone wave looked stellar, Clocks and Glass of Water with the mesmerizing lazers outstanding as ever! Chris was impressed with us during VLV (we did sound stunning) and Lost! When we sang "doesn't mean I'm lost", he threw his head back and went "ohhh!"

Others have already posted the story of Chris asking the audience to sing to Will to ask for forgiveness for his screw-up during Yellow

There were a few technical glitches: during Fix You, Jonny's guitar went bad somehow, sorry I'm not a music technician so i have no idea what the lingo is, but Matt stepped in immediately after the song and brought him a different one,the confetti cannons shot the butterflies more straight up than out, and they didn't travel too far so more wound up on the stage than out in the audience, the jumbotrons weren't functioning either properly and sometimes not at all. And i guess at the end of the show, right after LiTii, some lunatic jumped the fence to the pit area and hopped up on stage, but security apprehended him in record time. WTF?

The adrenaline rush, excitement, thrill and anticipation when Blue Danube kicks in is still there, and I still get emotional during LIJ as the flourescent butterflies shower the night sky, and I still cry at DAAHF when the powerful, symbolic VIVA backdrop is released, even after attending numerous concerts.

To any and all out there reading this who haven't seen them live yet, you MUST MUST MUST! These four talented young men put their heart and soul into these concerts, that are a feast for the eyes, ears and emotions, as I'm tearing up right now. And it's evident they are always thinking of their fans, a class act.

I must confess that I am really not that into Coldplay, but I have to admit that last night was one amazing and unforgettable show.

The band gets extra points because of fan service:

The set list consisted mainly of fan favorites and I can say that I had heard most of the songs, although I’ve read that it was basically the same set list from other shows in their continuing Viva La Vida Tour.

For a moment, the band left the main stage and walked to a mini stage that was located in the middle right rows of the venue and played a couple of songs among the crowd. I thought that was very cool. But then, later on, they walked to ANOTHER mini stage in the Lawn Area way in the back of the venue (you know, the Mexican Section of the Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre) and it was right where we were standing!!! It was insane! They played 3 acoustic songs in that mini stage, including a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” and we were right there with the band! I had never experienced anything like that at any other concert I’ve been to. Other artists should take note of what this band does for their fans.

There was a funny moment earlier in the show where lead singer Chris Martin fucked up in the first verse of “Yellow” and said that drummer Will Champion had given him an ugly look. He then had the audience sing along an “I am sorry Will” song for him.

Before the show ended, Martin acknowledged the opening acts Amadou & Mariam, and Kitty Daisy & Lewis. He then said that the audience would receive a free single CD of their song “Left Right Left Right Left” (which you can also download from the official Coldplay website), and we did, when we left the venue.

Media Reviews

Chris Martin is a rock star. And as cliché as that might sound, it’s true: Martin is a bona fide rock star. Now, before you scan your eyes to the next article thinking “I could have told you that,” wait a second, because while he has obviously been a celebrity and a very impressive lead singer since Coldplay’s debut with its 2000 album “Parachutes,” it’s the “Viva La Vida” tour that will go down as launching the rock star phase of Martin’s career.

This was evident July 16 at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre, where Martin and the rest of Coldplay took the stage. Not only does Coldplay have tens of thousands of fans eating out of its hands in arenas, Martin and Co. swoon every audience with everything from its initial hit — “Yellow” — to a timely and beautifully done cover of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” — to “Viva La Vida,” the name of its hit song, latest album and current mega-success of a tour.

Aside from the musical composition, the show was backed by a spectacle of special effects, including six magic balls that hung from the stage and made up for the lack of big screen projection by giving the fans truly hypnotic images of the band as it played. Oh, and let’s not forget the hundreds of extra-large yellow balls bouncing around the arena during “Yellow,” spontaneously combusting almost as though on a timer throughout the song.

Martin now has four albums of hit songs under his belt, a chemistry with his three bandmates that kept the set running smooth with its banter and a charisma that oozed “rock star” as he bounced around from one side of the stage to the other, occasionally getting up close and personal with the audience from two side stages set up in the amphitheater at Cricket Wireless. Yes, those are the reasons why Martin, and by association the rest of the band, have catapulted themselves from a successful rock band to first-class rock stars. British alt-pop band Coldplay thrilled a packed house at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre Thursday night, performing their decreasingly-unique brand of melancholic piano jams to the thousands in attendance. Playing mostly cuts off of their 2008 release “Viva La Vida,” frontman Chris Martin and Co., used an array of dazzling lights and lasers and clever camera angles to enhance the visual experience.

In addition, in typical Coldplay fashion, they had fan interactivity as well, including releasing giant yellow balloons which spectators bounced around like beach balls, during the band’s signature single “Yellow.” Martin also urged fans to start a “cell phone lights wave,” and eager concertgoers obliged, holding up their phones and doing the wave from left to right, in a unique dazzling display.

But the highlight of the night (at least for those in the nosebleeds) was the band’s mini-set performed smack dab in the middle of the lawn seats. Joined by guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion, Martin performed “Green Eyes,” “Death Will Never Conquer,” and a special cover version of the late Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” (see video)

It was a real treat for those close enough to shoot pictures or video of the worldwide sensation. Upon leaving after Billie Jean, my friend whose name is coincidentally enough Michael Jackson (no joke), shouted “One more for the peons!,” followed by “We paid the least amount to see you!” Unfortunately, neither of these were enough to keep the boys there for additional songs.

Whether you like Coldplay or not, there’s no denying their global appeal. Undoubtedly, one of the most popular bands in the world, shows like the one Thursday night are the reason why.

Even before Coldplay sent dozens of giant yellow balloons bouncing into the crowd to the accompaniment of their hit song, "Yellow," I knew this was going to be a great show. Coldplay knows how to have fun and at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre in Chula Vista on Thursday night, they invited us to the party.

Singer Chris Martin treated the crowd like a bunch of friends, asking us join him in singing an apology to drummer Will Champion after he messed up part of the song. He also joked about the tailgating habits of Americans and repeatedly thanked the crowd -- with apparent sincerity, and once in Spanish -- for singing along.

The band wandered down from the stage twice in the evening to play short sets out in the crowd. The second time, they were standing 30 feet away from me in the lawn seats when they broke into Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean."

Laser lights and swirling confetti added to the spectacle without detracting from band's energetic music and compelling lyrics. Before the show, text messages from fans screaming COLDPLAY RULES!!!! scrolled across the giant screens at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre in Chula Vista.

The diehard fans were right, Coldplay rocks.

Coldplay San Diego preview: "Rock artists' fine line between borrowing and stealing"

If you want to accuse Coldplay of musical plagiarism over its 2008 hit song “Viva La Vida,” get in line, writes the San Diego Union Tribune. Coldplay, who perform on Thursday at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre, was sued late last year by veteran San Francisco guitarist Joe Satriani, who alleged that “Viva La Vida” brazenly took from his 2004 song, “If I Could Fly,” Why they decide to focus on a plagiarism case rather than the forthcoming show is probably due to Satriani's roots in CA. Wonder if he got a ticket to one of Coldplay's West Coast shows. Hmm. Anyway, here is the rest of the article...

Coldplay was also accused last year of copying parts of “Viva La Vida” from an obscure 2008 number by Brooklyn's Creaky Boards, called – fittingly – “The Songs I Didn't Write.”

Coldplay, Satriani and the Creaky Boards' songs all bear, in varying degrees, similarities with 2002's “Frances Limon” by top Argentinian rock band Los Enanitos Verdes. In turn, “Frances Limon” owes a debt to the instrumental section from Toto's 1982 song, “I Won't Hold You Back,” although no one from Toto appears to have taken any legal action, at least not yet.

More recently, Yusuf Islam (the former Cat Stevens) said in May that the same Coldplay hit also bears a striking similarity to his 1973 song, “Foreigner Suite.” But sound-alike songs are nothing new in rock, a style in which imitation has long been a way of life and, on occasion, very high-priced lawsuits. The electronic sampling that is de rigueur in hip-hop aside, rock's reliance on instrumental structures often derived from basic 12-bar blues is the source of both the music's visceral impact and its stylistic limitations.

With a finite number of chords, time signatures and topics to write about, achieving originality in rock has become increasingly challenging. Even the most acclaimed artists, from The Beatles and Bob Dylan to Prince and current buzz band Dirty Projectors, borrowed from others as they learned to create and develop their own styles.

“You have to separate between bands that are accidentally sounding like someone and bands that are ripping someone off,” said White Stripes' leader Jack White, who performs here in late August at Street Scene with his latest band, The Dead Weather. White has frequently been criticized for borrowing – vocally and guitarwise – from Led Zeppelin in particular, but he dismisses such comments as “a lazy reference” by journalists.

What separates the greats from the pretenders and wannabe's in music is the ability to absorb various influences and use them as building blocks to make something distinctly your own. “You can absolutely steal ideas from anybody, as long as you twist them into something original,” said acclaimed English singer-songwriter Richard Thompson. “If I regurgitated Ralph Vaughan Williams, or Hank Williams, I'd have to throw it away. But if I added something as interesting of my own, then fair enough.”

Adding something of his own is exactly what David Bowie did when he wrote songs for Iggy Pop's 1977 album, “Lust for Life,” which he also produced. “(Bowie) was tired of me, tired of rock 'n' roll and wanted to get the (album) production contract over,” Pop recently told the English music magazine Uncut. “He said, 'Right, we're going to rewrite any damn song.' I won't say which songs by other people but I think it's a hilarious attitude. He was like, 'I could do that (song), and I could do that better!' He reeled off about five of those (in) about five hours.”

Depending on how conspicuous the musical “rewriting” is – and how commercially successful the result – legal action may follow, as artists as varied as Janet Jackson, Rod Stewart, Steely Dan and the late George Harrison discovered. In 1976, Harrison's 1970 hit “My Sweet Lord” was ruled to have “unintentionally copied” “He's So Fine,” a 1962 song by the American R&B vocal quartet The Chiffons. Harrison had to pay $587,000. In a strange twist, The Chiffons subsequently recorded their own version of “My Sweet Lord,” while the music publishing company that won the judgment against Harrison was later taken over by ex-Beatles' manager Allen Klein (who died last Sunday).

Coldplay's embattled “Viva La Vida” is being featured nightly on the band's current tour, which is named after the song. The group, not surprisingly, is seeking to downplay the controversy. In late May, Coldplay singer Chris Martin wrote on his band's Web site: “Yeah, some people are suing us at the moment and although it was initially a bit depressing, now it's become really inspiring. You think, 'Right, if everyone's trying to take away our best song, then we'd better write 25 better ones.' ... Now we've got more to prove than ever before.”

Coldplay drummer Will Champion sounded more defensive in a May interview with the English newspaper the Guardian. “For some reason, God only knows why, it's the successful songs that seem to be the ones that are accused of being stolen,” Champion said. “There are elements of our music that I've heard in other people's music, but it's kind of ... I don't know. It's interesting, but a very difficult thing to define.”

The difficulty may lie in the numbers, a point Champion made in the same interview. “There are only eight notes in an octave and no one owns them,” the mathematically challenged drummer said. “And there are probably about 12,000 songs that feature the exact same chord progression. I think it lies on an intent to steal, which we certainly have never done and never would.”

Intent, or lack thereof, may have played a role in Islam (the former Cat Stevens) backing off his previously announced intention to file a suit of his own against Coldplay, which he said would have been determined by “how well Satriani does.”

“They did copy my song, but I don't think they did it on purpose,” Islam told the London-based Daily Express last month. Islam was less forgiving in 2003, when he successfully brought legal action against Flaming Lips for using the melody of his 1970 song “Father and Son” for its 2002 song “Fight Test.” (Creaky Boards, meanwhile, retracted its plagiarism charge against Coldplay, without explaining why.)

Of course, intent can be hard to prove. Ditto the sometimes fine line between flattery and thievery, as evidenced by the dozens of songs based on rock pioneer Bo Diddley's 1957 anthem, “Hey! Bo Diddley.”

Last month, two members of Men at Work became embroiled in a suit in their native Australia. The imbroglio stems from charges that the band's biggest hit, “Down Under,” reproduces the melody of the opening verse to the popular children's song “Kookaburra.”

Then, there's the signature guitar riff to the Rolling Stones' 1971 classic “Brown Sugar.” It has appeared, almost note for note, at the start of the Dandy Warhols' “Bohemian Like You,” The Specials' “Little Bitch” and “The Loser” by Chicken Shack. But each of those songs have their own added twists. That may be why there were no suits filed by the often litigious Stones, who more than a decade ago shared songwriting credits with k.d. lang and Ben Mink after the legendary English band learned that its song “Anybody Seen My Baby?” bore an uncanny resemblance to lang and Mink's Grammy Award-winning “Constant Craving.”

Then there are such performers as Lenny Kravitz and the Black Crowes, whose songs sometimes appear to be a composite of several songs by several different artists. The Strokes' 2001 breakthrough hit, “Last Nite,” achieved a trifecta of sorts by combining elements of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' “American Girl,” Iggy Pop's “Lust for Life” and The Jam's “Town Called Malice.”

Sometimes, though, candor makes all the difference. Neil Young memorably demonstrated this in 1974 with “Borrowed Tune,” which featured a melody he “borrowed” from the Rolling Stones' 1966 chestnut “Lady Jane.” Tellingly, Young's song includes the climactic verse: I'm singin' this borrowed tune I took from the Rolling Stones / Alone in this empty room, too wasted to write my own.
