Reviews

There is not an overabundance of first class bands visiting these shores and with U2 having postponed their concert from April until November, it had been a long time between drinks. Thanks to my Japanese girlfriend, I was able to procure two tickets to what I can only describe as the best concert of my life! There was a great vibe and everyone was ecstatic, filled with excitement and adrenaline at being given the opportunity to take pleasure in Coldplay, Live!

The lyrics to their opening song ‘Square One’ set the scene for this concert: ‘You're in control, is there anywhere you wanna go?. . .’ Yes, we were in control, we knew exactly where we wanted to go and we were already there!

The second song of the night was Politik and by this stage everyone was totally absorbed into the music. Chris’s piano solo was superb. The entire song was awesome and their refined sound reverberating throughout the stadium was awe inspiring.

Next: The first of many songs to succeed on a global scale; Yellow. During this song, massive yellow balloons filled with golden confetti were dropped onto the audience from above. Typical Japanese courtesy saw the fans politely returning what was not theirs and almost all of the oversize yellow balloons ended up on stage. Though there is a clear language barrier in this neck of the woods, Chris wasted no time demonstrating to the audience the desired outcome for these 2 dozen or so oversized yellow balloons. He decided that there was no other option then to begin attacking them with his guitar, samurai style. . . Chris’s first few swipes were slightly tentative, and the balloons resisted his efforts to make them pop, with one balloon bouncing high into the air after his swing hit it’s target, but failed to achieve the desired result. Two or three swings later, and he had mastered the art or popping these gigantic balloons, popping one after another, until there was nothing left but golden confetti showering down upon the band and the nearby audience.

Following this was ‘Speed of Sound’ the first of many successful tunes from their latest album.

Also one of my favorite songs from this album, it was masterfully played and only continued to further peak my enjoyment.

The rest of the concert is admittedly a bit of a blur. The set was as I had hoped, and each song was performed with enthusiasm and precision.

The entire set was as follows:

Square One Politik Yellow Speed Of Sound God Put A Smile Upon Your Face What If Don't Panic White Shadows The Scientist Till Kingdom Come Trouble Clocks Talk

Encore:

Swallowed In The Sea In my place Fix You

Admittedly, the audience was somewhat subdued at times, but this was understandable given the fact that they were unable to sing along with most of the lyrics. This however did not subtract for one second from the quality of the performance and the enjoyment had by all.

During the three or four days prior to this concert, I had given my girlfriend a crash course on the lyrics. She was already a Coldplay fan, having been subjected to their music on a regular basis, but the anticipation of witnessing them live gave her a newfound appreciation for them.

This appreciation grew throughout their awesome performance to what I could only class as complete awe and not surprisingly she was insisting that we played the 2003 DVD of their ‘Rush of Blood to the Head’ Tour once we arrived home, not wanting the moment to end. . . .

Thanks to Jon, Will, Chris and Guy and to the support crew for one of the best nights of our lives.
