British supergroup Coldplay paid tribute to the Socceroos when they opened their Australian tour tonight in Brisbane. Frontman Chris Martin made reference to Australia's qualification to the second round of the World Cup following today's 2-2 draw with Croatia. Martin changed the lyrics in the song Politik with a verse saying, "Give Harry Kewell Australia's second goal".
In front of 12,000 fans, at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre complete with a mosh pit, the band started their performance with Square One, the opening track of their latest album X&Y, which was the world's best-selling album last year.
Fans were treated to songs from the band's three albums, including their first international hit Yellow. Aiming to rival Irish rockers U2 as the world's top band, Coldplay are making their first major concert tour of Australia since initially coming Down Under for Big Day Out in 2001.
They were last in Australia three years ago for the Splendour in the Grass festival at Byron Bay. This time they are packing out concert venues and their act features a spectacular light show, panoramic video screens and computer graphic projection. Coldplay's set featured major hits Clocks and In My Place and the three song encore closed with Fix You – the band's favourite track from their current album.
Coldplay, who are supported by Sydney band Youth Group – enjoying success with their cover of Forever Young – play a second show in Brisbane tomorrow night before performing three times at the Sydney Entertainment Centre next week. The band also plays the first of three shows at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena next Saturday before travelling to Adelaide and Perth the following week.

British supergroup Coldplay charmed Australian fans with a tribute to the Socceroos and a Shane Warne joke when they opened the Down Under leg of their world tour in Brisbane.
Engaging frontman Chris Martin donned a Socceroos' scarf and marvelled at Australia's sporting credentials as Coldplay last night won over 12,000 enthusiastic fans at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. "As English people we just have to ask is there anything you can't do?" he said. "The answer is 'no'."
In tribute to Australia's qualification for the second round of the World Cup following the 2-2 draw with Croatia, Martin changed a verse in the song Politik, singing "Give Harry Kewell Australia's second goal".
Introducing the song God Put A Smile On Your Face, Martin - a keen follower of England's soccer team - said he hoped Australians would be smiling after the Socceroos next match against Italy. The energetic Martin brought Australia's Test cricket world-record holding leg spin bowler Warne into the act by saying "it's hotter up here than a Shane Warne text message".
Fans were treated to songs from Coldplay's three albums, including their first international hit Yellow complete with giant yellow balloons, and also a Johnny Cash tribute with a performance of Ring of Fire. Aiming to rival Irish rockers U2 as the world's top band, Coldplay are making their first major concert tour of Australia since initially coming Down Under for Big Day Out in 2001.
They were last in Australia three years ago for the Splendour in the Grass festival at Byron Bay. This time they are packing out concert venues around the country and their act features a spectacular laser light show, panoramic video screens and computer graphic projection.
Songs from their last offering X&Y - the world's biggest selling album last year - sounded far superior live than on record, particularly Talk and Swallowed In The Sea. The rhythm section of drummer Will Champion and bass player Guy Berryman packed far more of a punch live than on the X&Y album while Jonny Buckland lived up to his reputation as one of the world's best lead guitarists.
Fans lapped up the major hits such as Clocks and In My Place and the three song encore closed with Fix You - the band's favourite track from their current album and a stirring concert finale.
Coldplay, supported by Sydney band Youth Group - enjoying success with their cover of Forever Young - will perform in Sydney next week plays the first of three shows at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena next Saturday before travelling to Adelaide and Perth. The charismatic Martin - married to Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow - is also due to appear on Andrew Denton's ABC TV show Enough Rope on July 3.

LAST year, British rock satirists Mitch Benn and the Distractions released a one-off single called Everything Sounds Like Coldplay Now. Yet the opening show of the band's Twisted Logic tour, marking their first Australian visit in three years, begged the contrary.
Despite their many imitators, none of whom has broken through on anywhere near the same scale, there is no one who sounds quite like Coldplay.
With their lineup unchanged after eight years, they still also look the same. Dressed almost identically in regulation black with white sneakers, the band took to an almost-bare stage, with panoramic back projection displaying a digital countdown. Just as it timed out to zero, the lights blazed red as Coldplay launched into Square One from last year's X&Y album, the world's biggest seller of 2005.
If their initial reception was rousing, it was downright cool compared to the wild, spontaneous applause that greeted singer Chris Martin when he improvised a line in the next song, Politik, in tribute to the Socceroos' World Cup ousting of Croatia earlier that day: "Did you cheer, too, when Australia got its second goal?"
With just three albums to their name, this show was inevitably a procession of hits. Still, it was a surprise, just three songs in, to hear the one that broke the band worldwide. With the lighting starkly white and the back projection turned off, it could have been one of their very early gigs as the band eased into Yellow, this time to quiet, reverential applause. You couldn't help thinking they were getting it out of the way early so as to avoid the millstone encore.
While the rendition itself was curiously flat, the 12,000-strong audience was soon distracted by the release of several huge yellow balloons, each one eventually exploding in a shower of golden tinsel as they were jostled around the auditorium.
Duly liberated from his primary duty as entertainer, frontman Martin was then free to move between his four favoured modes: seated at the keyboard and emoting in that reedy upper register of his; strapping on a guitar as second-choice prop; running to the back of the venue, headset mic in place, for his customary man-among-the-people stunt; or prowling the vast stage like the keeper of the world's widest goalmouth.
So, are Coldplay the biggest band on Earth? Tell that to U2, Radiohead and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As the Socceroos had proved just 15 hours earlier, you don't have to be a winner to be loved.

Coldplay are continuing with their Johnny Cash tribute by playing ‘Ring of Fire’ during their current Australian tour.
The song has been a part of the Coldplay setlist since last year. Singer Chris Martin had previously written at the band’s official website that before Cash died, they had planned a collaboration, but sadly, it was not to be.
"We did a song for Johnny Cash. We recorded it with Rick Rubin and everything and all that was missing was his vocals. He was going to fly out to LA the week after he died. It's really sad", Martin wrote at coldplaycom
The tour started last Friday in Brisbane.
The setlist was:
Friday 23rd June, 2006:
Square One (from X&Y, 2005) Politik (from A Rush of Blood To The Head, 2002) Yellow (from Parachutes, 2000) Speed of Sound (from X&Y, 2005) God Put A Smile Upon Your Face (from A Rush of Blood To The Head, 2002) What If (from X&Y, 2005) Don't Panic (from Parachutes, 2000) White Shadows (from X&Y, 2005) The Scientist (from A Rush of Blood To The Head, 2002) Till Kingdom Come (from X&Y, 2005) Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash cover) Clocks (from A Rush of Blood To The Head, 2002) Talk (from X&Y, 2005)

This was without a shadow of a doubt, the greatest night of my life. Coldplay were incredible, as was expected. I thought the best song live tonight was God Put A Smile Upon Your Face, but the atmosphere in Fix You, Yellow and Clocks, was incredible.
However, tomorrow night my just be the greatest night of my life…. im going again!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the words of Chris Martin… F#$% the Dutch...
[Thanks StuckinSquareOne]
OMG im still in my coldplay shirt lol, my ears are buzzing but i dont care i feel like doing it all over again lol. after the interval i was trying to spot chris martin and band members - it was soooo nerve racking. and hey who were the guys who had lighters and sparklers - damn u lol. it was great to see heaps of people of my age down there - (17ish lol) and also the older generation, it shows that coldplay is loved by many.
I also cant get over how energetic Chris is, i wish i had that much energy, jumping and rolling around on the stage hehe. I sang to every song and tried to get my partner into it more lol - hes the shy type. Anyway enough from me let everyone know how good your experience was at the 23rd show in Brissy!!!!!!. I rate it 10 outta 10. Coldplay you rock!
Last night was the first Coldplay show I've been to. To be honest I dont own 1 coldplay cd but was pleasantly surprised that I knew all but 1 song perfomed and greatly enjoyed the night. That probably shows the strengh of the band. The only one I didnt know was the Johnny Cash cover. Although they've only got 3 albums every song went down well with probably Yellow, the Scientist and Talk being my hightlights.
The only criticism from me would be the set length (at around 100 minutes) but then I'm used to 3 hour Bruce Springsteen concerts. Although it was only 100 minutes it was compact and tight with no fat (ie 10 minute bass / guitar / drum solos) .
Chris reference to Harry Kewell and a couple of other Australian things made me proud to be Australian. I've probably been to about 300 concerts and that would have been only the fourth where the singer decided to go running off into the audience and around the arena. Even more surprising was that he emerged unscathed which could'nt be said for Justin Hawkins, Brian Johnston with Angus Young on his shoulders and .......(sorry) John Bon Jovi (it was a long long long time ago.)..
The only thing I didnt get was when Chris introduced 1 song and said it came from therealbum released in 1984 or roundabouts (I assume he was taking the piss).
I'll definitely see them next tour.
[Thanks Nick]
First night of Coldplay's 2 nights in Brisbane was magical. Best band in the world by a long way :)
Highlight was the Scientist (most beautiful song ever) and also Don't Panic. It was kind of a Best Of setlist. Basically all the songs that everyone wanted to hear but still good nonetheless. And who would have thought Jonny could sing hey?
Biggest cheer was for Clocks though i reckon. The noise was deafening after that finished. Top night all round. And even better for me as I got Chris' guitar pick at the end :)
Also, Youth Group were also amazing as always.
[Thanks Scott]
i went to this concert by myself because all my friends are either into metal, or didn't wanna pay the $125 to go, but i would've paid more, even though it was one of the shorter concerts ive been to.
it sucked bad that i was by myself, but once "square one" got into gear and chris martin came running towards the front of the stage, i couldnt wipe the smile of my face. if god put a smile upon my face, all praise chris martin.
highlights of my night were all of chris' socceroos references, especially the modified lyric in "politik" where he sang "give harry kewell australia's second goal", and hearing the band play "fix you" to end the night. that song means a lot to me and within the crowd's atmosphere - it was unforgetable. the happiest night of my life. better than sex. thank you coldplay.
... and i hate that feeling you get after you've seen a really good concert and all you wanna do is re-live it again and again.
[Thanks Nathan]
Oh my god....thats all i can say. I was in awe the whole show. Even shedding a tear. I was just in so much disbelief that i was at the 23rd June Brissy show to witness what I believe is the greatest band in the world at the moment and will one day surpass the beatles.
I love coldplay, there lyrics and overall music is soulful, genuine, inspiring and out of this world. I dont understand people who call their music soulless and boring. Its definitely far from that.
Like one of the reviews i definitely agree....i keep wanting to relive that day....It was definitely the best night of my life so far (and by a long way).
I will definitely be going to their next concert and can't wait until their next album release.
Thanks COLDPLAY...u guys are awesome
[Thanks St. John]
