Reviews
Coldplay, Entertainment Centre, June 26 THE World Cup has lessons for everyone (apart from the key tip that cynical diving can gain a result). Twenty to 30 years ago there was a handful of elite teams, a slightly larger second tier who could occasionally trouble them and a large swathe of enthusiastic but outclassed performers who made up the numbers and dreamt.
These days the largest group is the second-tier where, thanks to the globalisation of skills and opportunities, most of them can regularly match it with the elite, push them hard and, if opportunity arises, spring a (mild) surprise. There are a lot of good to very good teams. Here is the rub: there still is something indefinable but undeniable that the great teams have which separates them from the pack at crucial moments. Greatness isn't thrust upon them; it's within them.
It is the same in music where globalisation - via music videos, ready access to recorded music and widescale touring - has elevated the standard immeasurably. There are a lot of good to very good bands, but the elite remain few - the likes of the U2s, the Rolling Stones, the Radioheads.
Coldplay have long nurtured the dream of being among the this group. The bands who not only sell well, not only write and play well but who also matter and who can turn a show from a display of skills and entertainment into something glorious.
On their third Australian tour, with the world's highest-selling album last year in their kit bag, with nearly a dozen songs which have seeped into the public consciousness, with the force and thrust that comes from confidence, Coldplay make their bid for greatness.
Opening with the power plays of Square One and Politik and then adding a muscular Yellow, Coldplay set their stall clearly. This was going to be an attacking formation with bass player Guy Berryman and, particularly, heavy-hitting drummer Will Champion, pushing up hard from the back while the creative force of guitarist Jon Buckland crafted elegant and penetrative shapes in the middle, particularly in the climax of Clocks.
Playing alone upfront, an irrepressible Chris Martin bobbed and weaved, searched out the corners and in his polite way demanded and deserved attention. He has all the attributes of a fine frontman. The group has all the attributes of a fine rock band.
What they lack is that bit of magic, that hard-to-put-your-finger-on finishing touch which would have shifted the show from hit-filled, satisfyingly solid and entertaining into transformative.
Coldplay are good. However, for all their qualities and skill, they are not now and may never be one of the greats.

So I just got back from the first Sydney gig and I have to say, that was the best time I have seen them (seen them twice in the U.K). I was about as far away from the stage, as I could have been, but it was still amazing. Setlist was as follows (might be slightly out of order):
Square One Politik Yellow (Chris said he wishes he had a song that was appropriate to the coulour of the country) Speed Of Sound (Chris has a habit of falling over in this song)
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face (Chris Made a reference to the Socceroos knocking Italy out of the world cup) What If (Thought it was going to be X & Y, but was thankful when they started playing What If) Don’t Panic (Nice to hear this in the non-acoustic section) White Shadows (Are you sure Johnny and Chris aren’t gay, they seemed to be getting awfully close at the end of the song Laughing ) The Scientist
Acoustic section: Till Kingdom Come Ring Of Fire
Clocks (The red lazers were amazing) Talk
Encoure: Swallowed In The Sea In My Place (Chris got thrown an Ozzie scarf and wrapped it around Johnny, much to the delight of the crowd) Fix You _________________ Twisted Logic tour 2006: Sydney Entertainment centre: 26th June-Awesome

JUST got home. After waiting from 9am at Gate F, it was more than worth it. Managed to get front row centre, and after waiting to see Coldplay for 10 years, I’m glad I’ve finally done it. I loved every mntue. Highlights:
- Chris mentioning that there is always a band bigger than you, they’re Australian and they play children’s songs (referring to the Wiggles) - Chris running to the back upstairs tiered section, he just bolted up there and everyone was trying to find him, but he was up in the crowd singing and being mobbed! - Having John and Chris lay on the ground whilst playing/guitar singing RIGHT IN FRONT of me! - Chris laying on the stage with his head hanging off it, again, right in front of me. - John wearing a socceroos scarf after a fan threw one on the stage - Seeing Guy and John outside the entertainment centre afterwards with NO ONE but us recognising that it was them whilst about 50 people were just around the corner waiting for the band - lol - Chris forgetting/mixing up words twice - Everyone trying to pop the balloons including Chris and the security guards - The retun of the disposable cameras! - The band bowing at the end displaying a Socceroos scarf across them. Downsides: - The drunks next to me who made the crowd squashier than it already was and it was reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllyyy tight! Argh!!! Sooooooo much fun! Be well! Rach
I waited at gate A from 2:30 and it was worth every bit of it!! I was standing dead centre in the second row from the barrier and it was amazing!!
Coldplay played their acoustic set right in front of us-it was unbelievable!! All the best coldplay songs were played-my personal favoruites were politik and in my place--Chris was so entertaining he was loving the crowd and everyone was going off!!
The songs i can remember which were played are (not in order): sqaure one, politik, yellow, till kingdom come, ring of fire, don't panic, fix you, the scientist, swallowed in the sea, clocks, what if, speed of sound, talk, white shadows A brilliant concert-sound and visuals were really good and atmosphere of the floor was amazing!!
Wish i wouldve caught one of those cameras tho!!
Best part was when Chris and John lay on the ground right in front of me-and the yellow balloons-GO THE CONFETTI!!
Everyone was into it-security, floor and seated people were all standing by the end--chris told them they weren't missing out on much by sitting just "a lot of sweat and some ugly english guys".
Word stuff ups were forgotten when chris got us to sing back during the scientist--crowd was pumped then!!
Just looking at some of my photos-advice to all who are going to any Australian concerts-TAKE YOUR CAMERA AND LINE UP EARLY--especially if you want to get near the front Loved all the references to socceroos, wiggles and Australia, and that all coldplay thought they were was a bunch of ugly english guys-so down to earth Most amazing concert ever-very tight in the mosh but GREAT ATMOSPHERE and make sure you sway in fix you and watch for the light seen in the film clip!!

Well let me just start off by saying Coldplay is a soundtrack to my life. Each song can be put down to a moment in my life and not many bands can capture that connection with their audience.
I was absolutley rappped when I got tickets to see Coldplay.Me and my girlfriend at the time live in the bottom left hand corner of australia so to get ticjets in Sydney was a bit of a trek, but as you would imagine, if you are reading this, it was bloody worth every bit.Youth group played a good set, and they were very good at setting the overall mood.I enjoyed their songs anyway.
I was getting very nervous about how coldplay would sound.I wanted them to (no offense to YG) sound better than their support, and when the drums semi came in on the first song I was far but dissapionted. Then the chorus came and "square one" has since then become my favourite song, closely followed by "sparks" off parachutes. The rest of the concert was a perfect blend of chris' haunting melodies and unusuel stage antics, johnys amazing yet what seemed to be effortless guitar riffs, with a rythym section that kept everything together.I loved the improvisation on god put a smile on my face, chris sang a line about our coccoroos not deserving that painful penalty.very clever to think of the ryme!Yellow was fairly early, and the johny cash tribute was awesome.very intimate being acustic, and made me realize they can capture an audience with little nioze. All in all my favourite song would have to have been the scientist.just a beutiful melody and yet, the soundtrack to that night, when I saw a very influentail band.Cheers coldplay, and cheers for being so nice when we met you after.
Left a very good impression!
