For all its radio hits, Coldplay has always seemed like the poor man's U2. In concert, at least in Saturday night's show at TD Waterhouse Centre, singer Chris Martin and his band mates gave that and a run for its money.

Coldplay delivered a steady stream of fan favorites, augmented by a gorgeous assortment of spotlights and video effects that were enough to make one forget that all the songs basically sound the same.

Compared with the odd lack of energy at U2's arena show in Tampa last fall -- maybe the band was just having an off night? -- Martin was a captivating front man for a band that looked like it was genuinely having fun.

Not everything was so positive. The sound mix on the opening "Square One, also the lead track on Coldplay's X&Y, was a discouraging mess that buried Martin's vocals in a blaring wall of sound. Fortunately, the balance quickly improved as the show moved along.

There were plenty of visual distractions to compensate for the sound. The musicians emerged as silhouettes in front of a giant black-and-white digital clock on the massive video screen behind them. That image segued into brightly colored walls of light that flashed blue and green as the kinetic Martin embellished his singing with almost gymnastic flexibility.

When Martin moved to the piano for "Politik, he and the band were bathed in a dazzling combination of lights, ranging from a solitary white spot to explosion of flashing lights in the big chorus.

"Yellow,a song diluted into parody by radio saturation, was enlivened by dropping giant yellow balls filled with confetti on the audience. Martin boyishly chased the props around the stage, puncturing them with the neck of his guitar.

At one point that band came together in a sort of unplugged arrangement (though still plugged in) to do a few songs, including a ragged but heartfelt "Ring of Fire that inspired a massive sing-along.

There were plenty of other opportunities for the crowd to participate, especially on the big anthemic choruses of "The Scientist and the encore version of "In My Place.

Martin used such moments to create a warmth that isn't typical of arena shows. His easy manner added a sense of humanity to all the high-tech special effects.

Opening act Fiona Apple also injected some personality into her 45 minutes, a politely received combination of older material (most notably "Shadowboxer and "Criminal) and songs from her new Extraordinary Machine. The straightforward, moody-sounding piano-based arrangements were ill-suited for the arena setting, although Apple's strange dancing at the microphone made her a compelling character.

Coldplay, on the other hand, had no problem commanding attention. On this night, at least, it carried itself like the biggest rock band in the world.

Tonights show left me absolutely speechless. Somehow, i managed to get from my third row seats to against the barracade on the right side as you look at the stage. The set list was pretty much the expected set list, nothing too new. Chris changed the words in God Put a Smile On Your Face from “God gave you style and gave you grace” to “God gave you sea and gave you world”…very cute. There were soo many highlights that ill write more about later or let one of the other orlando concert goers with better writing skills tell but I will say the most amazing things happened to me during this concert.

It all started with Guy, I kept waving my arms towards me trying to signal to him that i wanted his camera. He smiled, took my picture, and then lightly threw me the camera. I of course was blinded by a flashing light but I got it back from some very sweet and generous girls that knew he was tyring to give me the camera. So i will definitely get those developed and post them here tomorrow asap.

THEN during talk, chris was looking for a phone, it kind of seemed like many didnt know he would do this, but i had mine out and ready and waving furiously. He smiled and grabbed my phone and called my best friend who luckily answered and heard everytying. She’s going with me tomorrow to tampa so she was stoked to get the call.

The highlight of the evening though was chris took off his shirt to show a magic jersey underneath that had his name on it and HE THREW OUT HIS JACKET!! I have chris martins Jacket with the holes in the armpits and everything. I still can’t believe it sitting with me right now. He threw it right to me, but i had to fight with a guy for a few minutes to get it. HAs he done this at other concerts? I had no idea he threw his shirts out like that. It was amazing of course, however i have to say it smelled pretty ripe (which is of course expected) and it was SOAKED. Which in a very disturbing way was QUITE okay with me.

It really was the best show of my life. It topped my other coldplay show as well! Luck was definitely with me last night. I got Guy’s camera, Chris sang into my phone, and I caught Chris’s jacket at the end! If anyone has a picture of Chris singing into my phone please let me know!

[Thanks Kate]

It was a night full of energy and mistakes and mishaps…but the crowd just cheered even more…which Chris really liked. I was seated even closer than I thought I would be, like the 5th row up front, right in front of Jonny with Chris facing…great seat, exept it would be my luck that two amazons would be directly right in front of me.. It was really hard to get decent pictures trying to look around them all night.

But I was close enough to see those intense blue eyes and green eyes! Wow, I just kept saying OMG!..the people next to me were great, sang all the songs and jumped around like crazy! Everyone sang almost every song and Chris just smiled and thanked us for the great chorus and said we were a wild crowd.

Guy’s bass stopped working at one time and he was shaking marroccas and just laughing, then Chris started laughing and they all were laughing when Guy ran across the stage to switch guitars and ran across again….Chris just kept turning the mike to the crowd cause we were such good singers!!! Hahah! Very Happy Cool Jonny sang a solo in Don’t Panic and his playing totally rocked all night…really really great!

The set was the same as DC’s…the acoustic was very good with Trouble…Chris knelt down next to Will and they both played on the keyboards together…the crowd was really into it all night. Chris added his bit about Disney World and commented about how high the nosebleed seats were…the highest he has ever seen..and of course about the beautiful warm weather and then stopped again to add “Pardon us if we sweat all over you…because we sweat alot especially when its hot.”

When Chris ran to the back, this older lady bent over had him pinned to the wall and wasn’t going to let him go…he could hardly sing…so the crowd was laughing about that…he ran right past me, but I was 4 seats in from the aisle, wished I was on the end…Chris runs so fast, that you can hardly see him pass.

And the end of the night…Chris came back with a long blue jersey hanging from the bottom of his black jacket and when he was done singing Fix You, he took off his jacket..it was an Orlando Magic Jersey with Martin #06 on it…woohwooh!…everyone really screamed…then he took it all off…OMG! a bare chested Chris! and threw it to the audience on the side…how cool was that! Walking off with no shirt on! Shocked

Great show and I have to take some vitamins and rest now, cause tomorrow is leg #2 of my awesome CP weekend …on to Tampa show!

SEEING THEM TONIGHT IN ORLANDO WAS THE MOST AMAZING THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The show was absolutely incredible. I loved how they all seemed like they were having just so much fun tonight - the Disney World comment Chris put into “God Put A Smile…” was absolutely hilarious! (well, as a ORL native, those things are funny… to me. Yea.)

All of the little goof ups were great fun, too. It just made the show so much more special. It was great that Chris acknowledged everyone way up top in the second level. If you’ve never been to the T.D. Waterhouse before, those seats are REALLY FREAKIN’ HIGH! He was like, “we’ve played a lot of places, but I’ve never seen anyone at such high altitudes!” It was great.

Though, the most incredible part of the night was when Chris ran to the back, just behind the sound & light boards. I wasn’t quite sure what he was doing, b/c it looked like he was going out some exit down there. But (BTW, we had seats that were 8 rows back from the edge of that first level) he got up on this platform as me & my friends were rushing down the stairs and WAS RIGHT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RAILINGS!!! WE ALL REACHED OUT AND TOUCHED CHRIS MARTIN!!! I got my hand in his hair, almost pulling out his monitor (that would have been embarrassing!) , and I think that I stuck my hand in one of the holes in his shirt! We were like all leaning over the rails getting all over him!!! One of my friends shook his hand, the other gave him a noogie! Yea, and that one woman in the blue shirt was absolutely insane - she was practically all over him grabbing him and stuff! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy The funny thing was that she was one row over from us, and she was with her boyfriend. Razz I mean, if my girlfriend got all over Chris Martin, hey, more power to her!

The lighting was amazing - sound was beautiful - the screens and all of the projections were just phenomenal. It was an INCREDIBLE show.

THANKS, COLDPLAY, FOR THE AMAZINGLY-AWESOME SHOW TONIGHT!!!! I’LL NEVER FORGET IT FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!

[Thanks insidedisney]

I’m still on a high from last night! It was amazing….WAY better than I expected. I was a little scared about seeing one of my favorite bands in such a big place, but the crowd was amazing. Everyone was standing up, and for the most part singing along to everything..very good crowd. They went crazy for Chris during “In My Place” up there in the back! Ahh! And I loved “How You See The World” live! It caught people off-guard, and it was probably the only time I saw people sitting down. Did anyone else in their respective areas notice that they were the only ones singing along to that tune? Hmm, it was awesome, and people around me seemed to like it.

And I loved Chris’s chatter, but it was driving my crazy during “Don’t Panic.” He must have started the little riff 4 times before he finally started singing it, because he had something to say each time! Right After “Yellow,” he started popping the balloons with his guitar” and then during the Johnny Cash bit, he sprinkled some of the glitter on Jonny’s head.

He messed up “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face” big time, and then changed some of the words to “sometimes the singer messes up…” And then he changed some of the lyrics to “God gave you Sea and Disney World” right? I think I could hear him clearly when he said that, because it made me laugh..He was on top that night, very good.

He also went off on a rant about how it was very hot in the venue, and if any one was too hot and uncomfortable, they could go and get a refund. Then he said that Coldplay got their shoes from Andre Agassi (did I hear that right?) He said something before “The Scientist” about “this one goes out to all the TV producers.” Didn’t know what he meant by that, but he was kicking ass last night.

And I saw Chris grab your phone I Love Chris Martin! That was AMAZING! “Talk” was a highlight..for sure. And the “Happy Late Birthday Chris Martin” sign was adorable…we saw it from where we were. I can’t believe you got his jacket!

I’m dying inside because I’m not going to Tampa tonight (I have 2 midterms Monday morning) but PLEASE have fun and think of a big Coldplay fan that’s not gonna be there

OK, I’m shutting up now! That was so much fun...

I thought Coldplay's Tampa performance was incredible! It was my first concert ever, and there is no better band than Coldplay to mark that memory. Coldplay seems to put the audience into a trance. Their music is so beautiful and it really warms your heart. They were very personal, asking if we were okay throughout the concert. I felt as though it was only Coldplay and my boyfriend and I.

I will never ever forget this awesome concert. I wish I could go to all of their concerts! I wish there was a DVD of the Tampa concert. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I wasn't even sure if Chris Martin really fell during the concert, I thought he was just rollin around and jammin'! Feel better Chris!

[Thanks Kara]

Wow. I just have to say a few words about the concert last Saturday night. I was accompanied by a friend from Germany who didn't get a chance to see them last year when they toured Europe. We were both impressed. We are from the "older" 30/40 something fan club, and I have to say, I personally, was near tears. The group dynamic of seeing your favorite band with thousands of other adoring fans is one of the most incredible feelings in the world. Coldplay was in one word, "phenomenal." The few glitches that were in the show was just fine. Like a previous post mentioned it made the show more intimate. It was absolutely lovely...

And, to the lucky few who had contact with Chris Martin in some form or fashion (especially the woman in blue): Damn, I wish I were you... :)

[Thanks Stephanie]
