Coldplay Burswood Dome. Friday July 7 Five years ago a little-known UK band took to the stage at Metropolis City to entertain a crowd of less than 2000. Friday night's concert was a different story.

Since then Coldplay have developed in leaps and bounds. Literally. While most of those at the 2001 show were impressed by the depth of the songs and the obvious musicianship, the performance lacked lustre and energy.

The same could not be said of Coldplay's dynamic performance in front of a 16,500 capacity crowd at Burswood Dome last night (Friday July 7). Of course a lot has happened in the life of Chris Martin and co in that time.

First all there was the breakthrough hit "Yellow", the a critically acclaimed second album "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" and the Martin's relationship with Hollywood Princess Gywneth Paltrow, all of which helped propel the band to the very top of the music league. The band's status as one of world's biggest and best bands was confirmed when they were one of the headliners and main drawcards at last year's Live 8.

So it was with a great deal of anticipation that old fans waited to see how the band's live performance had improved over the last five years. Kicking off with "Square One" from last year's "X&Y", it was evident from the very onset that while the line-up was the same, this was a very different band. Chris Martin flew around the stage like a whirling dervish. Leaping, bounding and bouncing like a five-year-old high on too much red cordial.

His animated performance proved beyond doubt that he can rightfully claim his place alongside the best showman in the music world. The rest of the band stood still, happy to let Martin shine, all the while never wavering and never missing a beat as they launched into "Politik". Addressing the crowd for the first time Martin remarked that the band had "finally made it back to Perth".

The statement was greeted by a loud cheer from fans who had petitioned and hounded promoters not to let the band bypass Perth for a second time, after Coldplay failed to head west on their previous trip down under. "Yellow" provided the first big sing-a-long moment as massive yellow balloons filled with gold glitter were propelled from the back of the dome to the stage. Charming the crowd with a balance of charm, confidence and humility, Martin mused that it was "the first time the band had played a venue bigger than England".

The massive, aircraft-hanger proportions of the Dome seemed to be a constant source of amusement for Martin who changed the words to "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" to include the line: "God sent me here to play at this enormous place" and later remarked that the back row were "in a different time zone".

Given his comments and the loud cheer that erupted when Martin's image finally appeared on the huge screens behind the stage, it was disappointing that the screens did not stay focused on the band for the remainder of the evening. Perhaps Martin felt the same, because during "In My Place" he sprinted the length of the venue, appearing at the very back of the dome just seconds later, where he happily continued the song as fans clambered to get closer.

There was a lull in the middle of the evening with slower and lesser known songs, but considering Coldplay still only have three albums worth of material to play with, it is hardly surprising it was not a greatest hits show.

A short acoustic set saw the band step outside their pop rock comfort zone to perform a rousing rendition of the Johnny Cash classic "Ring of Fire".

All too soon the band departed the stage, but to the sound of much cheering and stamping they returned with a brilliant encore kicking off with "Swallowed In The Sea". Leaving their finest moment to the very end, the band bid adieu to their loyal Perth fans with the superb "Fix You". It was an amazing end to an impressive show that had just the right balance of spit and polish and raw energy to let the songs shine. Let's just hope Coldplay don't leave it another five years before they return to wow us once more.

The crowd sang along for yellow alright. ^_____^ + The balloons went on the stage and they batted them away. + Lots of screaming for speed of sound too. + His voice is hot. Far more hot live than on the CD. Really. + They made the display into a flying-through-the-stars view for speed of sound + HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH his voice broke when he started singing god put a smile on your face + *voice breaks* *laughter from crowd* Oh fuck. Sometimes I have this urge to sing like a girl. + Substituted a line as god sent me to perth yeah. + The clip for the scientist in the background was cool - zooming in from space all the way into skin cells on a persons hand. + He also made us sing back to him what he was singing. + your singing is marvellous by the way! + He took photos with a camera and threw that into the crowd. + The guitar in til kingdom come? SO MUCH <3. + Told us the story.* + Dedicated ring of fire to Johnny Cash (and The Wiggles). + trouble was beautiful - his voice is just love. + OMG clocks!!!111 + The light show for this was the best - LASERS. + It also got the biggest roar. + And behind the laser waves playing into the crowd, behind it all... + There was just a single spotlight on him playing the piano. *loves* + So hot. So damn hot. guh. + For talk he said if you guys on the side haven't stood up, now is an awesome time! + So we stood and did the hand waving and clapping and and yeah. + He sang into a random mobile. =O + ENCORE - screaming ourselves hoarse and clapped our hands til they were sore. + OMG SWALLOWED IN THE SEA ♥♥♥ possibly my favourite Coldplay song. + The light show was of handwritten lyrics and a songlist and a diary. ♥ + And just him and the piano again. + So beautiful. guh. ♥ + Yeah I love that song so damn much. + He ran into the crowd for in my place. + Up into the back stalls and into the top most row and sang. + Crowd went mad, I'm surprised he didn't get mobbed. + Finished with fix you. + Suspended lightbulb moment! (was wondering if he'd do that too) + He made the crowd sing along again. + SO AWESOME. + He did everything he was meant to. + The closing music was apparently good night by The Beatles.

  • About selling out 3 nights at Madison Square Garden and feeling awesome and like the best band evar and then being told that The Wiggles sold out 11 nights which brought him back to Earth.

This is the 3rd time that I have seen Coldplay, twice before in the UK, very small venues, no more than 200. Coldplay have transferred well into the bigger arenas, however they are less intimate. I had heard so many bad reports about this venue for noise quality, but I couldn't fault the sound from the band even though they were using backing tracks, as the piano cut in for Speed of Sound and Chris was centre stage but made a quick retreat to the piano to pick it up.

The audience should be held accountable, as they were very laid back maybe too respectful and the band sensed this as Chris kindly asked "I know it has been a long week however it would be nice for the people at the sides and back (seated areas) to stand up" they did and the whole atompshere changed. Talk rounded off the main set as a high point as the crowd finally acknowledged they were seeing a world class act.

Highlights for me were, Yellow, Swallowed by the Sea and the acoustic set. Lowlights a very poor audience, I have seen more activity in a morgue, than in the mosh pit for this show.

Overall a great performance which could have been so much better if the audience who had forked out $120 each, actually enjoyed themselves.

[Thanks Nigel]

After waiting SOOOOO long to see them (bought the tickets last September as soon as they were announced), we finally got to see Coldplay last night.... and they were fantastic. My hubbies b-day as well

Such a tight band, and Jon can even carry on playing guitar when Chris drags him down to the floor. Lucky it was an easy progression he was playing while laying on his back with Chris (no, no dirty thoughts ok?... they`re just friends ).

Chris is the consummate entertainer/nutter. I think he must be easily bored so he`s trying to entertain himself as much as the crowd. Jumping around, chucking wild `shapes`, cracking jokes, running. It`s like he has a cup of speed before going onstage. It`s brilliant! The other guys are far more reserved (not much choice as they`re more slaves to their instruments) but it`s great to see how much energy Will put`s into his drums.... beating them into submission, and Jon gyrating. Guy, he`s a far quieter figure on stage, but that probably lends him this superhero mystique. They all look great and Coldplay have presence (which sadly imho Youth Group don`t yet, but that may be because it was the first time I`d really heard them (except for `Forever Young` on RAGE, but that`s not their song anyway. Would love to hear a Coldplay cover of a nice Alphaville song.... wonder if they could handle "The Jet Set" ?), but what`s more important is that Coldplay played hot, not cold at all. Fantastic musicians.... what a sound.

Chris is so funny He told this story of why they`re so grounded..... When they had played 3 gigs in a row in Madison Square Gardens, and were apparently one of the biggest bands in the world, he was down at the beach (they have a decent beach in NY??) and a guy with his kid came up and said how great they were etc etc, and also mentioned that the Wiggles had played there for 9 gigs in a row. So there`s always someone better than you.

I`d heard that the Burswood Dome was the murderer of sound (apparently anyone who plays there sound terrible), but I`m guessing it must be the area you`re in, as the sound was great where we were (GA ... right in front of the stage). We got there about 6pm (concert due at 7:45), and there were already loads of people camped out, staking out their area`s. So we sat down as close as we could and waited. Even then, you get rude people pushing and barging in front of you and blocking your view. Lucky I`m tall, or I would have had to Kung-Fu some asses. Must buy a cattle prod for the next concert I go to.....

Youth Group cam on at 7:45 or so, and they were ok. Not bad, not brilliant songs, except for the 3rd and 2nd last original songs, which I think sound ALOT better than what they annouced and played as their next single. Like I said... it may take a bit more familiarity with them to appreciate their music (just like Coldplay, funnily enough..... growers). They did a great job though and were very professional... a good choice as support. It was a bittersweet concert for them, they said, as it was the last one for them and it had been a great tour with Coldplay, who they thanked deeply.

Coldplay played most of the songs you know and love, but a notable exception for us was "Amsterdam". We got a cover of Johnny Cash`s "Ring of Fire", so would like to hear the "Can`t Get You Out Of My Head" cover sometime if possible. My husband would like to hear the A-Ha cover ("Take On Me") as he used to be a fan of theirs (he has no taste sometimes, oh well..).

It`s a pity we don`t know how to meet Coldplay here in Perth, as I would have loved to let my 2yr old Coldplay freak daughter (Damaris Aubrey Fire Storm) meet them. So if anyone has any info on where they`re staying etc

We took some pics and stuff, which I`ll try to put up soon.....

Coldplay concert review - Perth - 07/07/06

A couple of years ago I fell in love with the song Clocks, and after further investigation I fell in love with the rest of Coldplay. I then always dreamed of seeing Coldplay perform at the Burswood Dome, but never really thought it would happen.

When I heard that the Twisted Logic Tour was heading for Australia but not Perth, I was straight onto the promoters and anyone else I could think of to hound at to get Coldplay to Perth. I did consider at one point flying east to see the show, because I didnt want to miss it for the world. Thankfully after the petition they decided to come, tickets went on sale 16 November, and I ended up getting front area GA tickets for the Perth show. The dream was going to become a reality.

It was a long, long wait. Nearly 9 months in fact. I found out some exciting news three days before the concert, that will be explained as you read on. But it all happened last friday night. We got there at 5pm and was happy to see the merchandise stand open. So I bought 2 t-shirts, poster and programme. I dumped the merchandise back in the car, and my mate and I ended up having some beers and dinner. Then I couldnt believe it, we were off to see Coldplay.

We waited for some more mates and missed Youth Group, which I wasnt phased on seeing anyway. Went in side and walked all the way down to the front. We were basically about 8 rows back which I was really happy with.

After the internet said Coldplay would hit the stage 8.45pm, it was another half an hour before the clock started ticking on screen to the tune of Square One. And what a show it was. They sounded great, the visuals were fantastic, and Chris had sooooooo much energy. He is also quite a comedian, but certainly a real showmen and can really get the crowd going. Yellow is my least favourite song of Coldplay, but when those balloons came out it was really fitting to the song, and everyone in the GA areas got into it dancing and popping the balloons, being rained on with gold tinsel. Highlights were pretty much most of the concert. All the songs rocked, and I was so happy that Trouble was included in the setlist for Perth. The crowd really got into it, well from where I was and what I could see anyway. I have never danced around so much. The lasers during Clocks waving and flickering on the back crowd looked awesome, and it was spun out looking from the front at Chris singing from the top of that back stand. I have been to see heaps of artists and gigs, but I never had seen a crowd get into as much as they did at this gig, and the crowds cheers at the end was the most deafening of any concert I have been too!

I work in customer service at the airport. My job includes check-in, passenger boarding, and retracting the aerobridge (the walkway between the terminal and the aircraft). Three days before the concert I found out that I was rostered on to the flight that Coldplay were leaving Perth on. The day after the concert I went to work, programme in hand. I met the band during check-in, and ended up getting Chris to sign my programme. I asked if he enjoyed his time in Perth and he said very much so. Nice guy. I also checked-in half the entourage, and had chats with them aswell. One of them explained that when they saw the Dome, they spun out at how big a venue it was that the band were about to play, but they all said that they were totally taken by surprise at the Perth crowds enthusiasm, and the band will definately be back here. They said it was one the best gigs of the whole tour! Well done Perth.

Anyway, I also got to mingle with the group as they boarded the aircraft, and I told them to come back soon. Then off they went. And that was my Coldplay experience. I cant wait for the DVD, and hopefully a new album and tour will be soon. At least I know Perth will be included this time.

It seemed to take and eternity for the day to actually arrive. I bought the tickets late last year and a flurry of activity to make sure we actually got some and went with some good “music mates”. It has to be said that the Burswood Dome isn’t a very good venue – its cavernous size means that even when it has 16,500 people in it, it still feels empty. It therefore took a while for the crowd and band to warm to each other. The support act, Youth Group, struggled to overcome this although found a bit of favour when they trotted out “Forever Young”.

Coldplay started strong with a big countdown into to Square One timing in beautifully with the point that the drums came in. Chris Martin is a very fluid performer – mainly in his physicality with jumping and bumbling around stage, not really looking like he is in full control of his motions.

Coldplay certainly come across as a much more intense band live – their sound is heavier, with much drums and more edge to the guitars. Chris Matins voice stands up in the live scene – I was fearing that all the falsettos would come across weak live but his voice was strong all night. The same can’t be said for the general sounds mix though – possibly the venue threw up too many challenges for the sound team. The BD really is just a big concrete box not designed to treat sound well. It took about three songs for the mix to settle and by the end I feel it had actually been quietened too much, especially as the last song was fix you.

Highlights were pretty much from the scientist onwards with swallowed in the sea probably rising above them all. Much has been said about the lack of spontaneity in the Coldplay set list but I guess the style of song means that a lot of backing tracks have to line up therefore things are pretty much set in stone. That being said I think there was a bit of spur of the moment when they went into trouble with Chris still on guitar and Will on Piano – it wasn’t until they got to the piano fill that Chris realised that Will didn’t know how to play it! It made for a rather crowed stage when the next fill came and he knelt down and played it in the high register.

Would have been nice to hear Amsterdam, Hardest Part and Green Eyes, but hey I’m not winging.

The venue impacted on my general enjoyment – not the bets gig I’ve been to but well up there. It has been improving in my mind over the last few days as I have remembered it! Will take a bit for something to top Neil Finn at Metros a few years back!
