Glass Of Water
From WikiColdplay
Glass Of Water is a song written during sessions for Coldplay's fourth album, but didn't make it onto the album. The song came about around October 2007 when it was introduced alongside Famous Old Painters in Prospekt's journal on October 26.
The song features heavily in the booklet of Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends despite being cut from the album. The title appears on the big painting in the booklet's centrefold, above some of the song's lyrics, and the very first page of the album is a map of Brazil with more lyrics from Glass Of Water scribbled over it in crayon. However, the song's lyrics have drastically changed since the painting was made.
Glass Of Water was debuted live on the final concert of Coldplay's 2008 European tour, at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, Belgium. It has since become a regular part of the setlist, the second non-Viva La Vida song to do so. A live video excerpt of the performance was posted on coldplay.com and the song formed the basis for the Glass Of Water minigame that gave away previews of the Prospekt's March EP. It is the most hyped song on the EP.
Reviews
4 Coldplay doesn’t often go big and bold, which is what makes this year’s Viva la Vida so refreshing. The just-released EP Prospekt’s March features songs that didn’t quite make the Vida cut, but not for lack of quality.
Amid the shameless cameos (Jay-Z doesn’t add much to Lost+) and wispy instrumentals (Postcards From Far Away is a 48-second doodle), Glass of Water, powered by an explosive chorus that cribs a bit of Joy Division’s Atmosphere and frontman Chris Martin’s predictably upbeat lyrics, should be treated as a can’t-miss blueprint for the band’s future.[1]
Lyrics
Scared of losing all the time He wrote it in a letter He was a friend of mine He heard you could see your future Inside a glass of water The ripples and the lines And he asked, will I see heaven in mine? That is just the way it was Nothing could be better And nothing ever was Oh, they say you can see your future Inside a glass of water The riddles and the rhymes Will I see heaven in mine? Ohhh-ohhh-ohhh-ohhh-I Son Don't ask Neither half full nor empty Is your glass Cling To the mast Spend your whole life living In the past Going nowhere fast So he wrote it on a wall The hollowest of halos Is no halo at all Television selling plastic Figurines of leaders Saying nothing at all And you chime, stars in heaven align Ohhh-ohhh-ohhh-ohhh-I Son Don't ask Neither half full nor empty Is your glass Cling To the mast Spend your whole life living In the past Going nowhere fast And what are we drinking when we're done? Glasses of water.
