Guy Rupert Berryman (born 12 April 1978) is a musician and a member of the group Coldplay. He plays bass guitar and is known as the soft-spoken member of the band. Eventhough he is left handed, he plays bass in the orthodox way.

Berryman was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, but he moved to Kent, England at age twelve. He has been playing bass guitar since he was sixteen. He grew up on funk and groove music and collects rare editions of those records.

Before forming Coldplay at University College London, Berryman was in a band called Time Out while he was still at school.

His father is an engineer who worked on the Channel Tunnel and currently works with Adrian Hemming. As Guy started an engineering degree at university, he chose engineering. He later found it very difficult and so shifted to architecture. He dropped out of his architecture degree after one year to focus on playing bass with Coldplay. While his bandmates were still continuing their degrees, Guy worked as a barman in a local pub.

Berryman's musical influences include James Brown, The Beatles, Kool & The Gang, Pink Floyd, Lyn Collins, Maceo Parker and The JBs.

Guy was never a sportsman during his schooling life as he never liked sports. He spent his time in school playing the Trumpet and Drums in the school band.

He is also known as the 'Dark Horse' of the band, mainly because he is the quietest of the lot and he does not fancy attention. He is media-shy. In their Twisted Logic Tour for the promotion of their third album X&Y, Guy had decided to take candid pictures of the band with disposable cameras and throw them to the audience during their live shows.

He is an avid supporter of Raith Rovers Football Club, from his native town Kirkcaldy. He is a big fan of Captain America and the Space Invaders. Guy owns a vintage retro style juke box and collects 7" singles to load on to it.

In autumn 2004, Berryman and Coldplay bandmate Will Champion guested on a-ha keyboardist Magne Furuholmen's first solo album, Past Perfect Future Tense.

In 2004, he married Joanna Briston, his childhood sweetheart in a low key ceremony, but later split in May 2007. She ran a fashionable clothing shop called Jezebell in London, until it was closed down following debts of more than £248,000. The recent opening of the store was attended by bandmates Jonny and Will and their partners. Guy and Joanna have one daughter, Nico, born on September 17, 2006.

May 2007

Coldplay star Guy Berryman has split from his wife - six months after they celebrated the birth of their daughter.

Bassist Guy, 29, is said to be devastated after agreeing to a separation from childhood sweetheart Joanna, 30. He has moved out of the couple's £2million home in Hampstead, North London, and is now living in a rented flat a few miles away. A source close to the couple said Guy has stayed in constant touch with yoga instructor Joanna, who gave birth to their daughter Nico in September.

A friend said: "They are both absolutely devastated but the relationship has been on the rocks for a while. They were delighted when Joanna fell pregnant last year and hoped that a new baby might help them work things out, but at the moment it looks like it's not to be. Guy's moved out of their house for the time being but has stayed close so he can see as much as possible of baby Nico. As far as splits go, it's all been pretty amicable but any divorce is nasty and it's obviously devastating for them both."

Berryman has amassed a £25million fortune since finding fame in 2000 with his Coldplay bandmates, singer Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland and drummer Will Champion. He is credited as co-writer of most of the group's hits. Softly-spoken Guy, who steers clear of the glitzy showbiz world, met Joanna when they were both growing up in Canterbury, Kent. They married three years ago.

Friends said cracks started to show in the relationship shortly afterwards amid the stress of Guy's hectic work schedule. The couple finally decided to split in March after Guy returned from Coldplay's Latin America tour. Joanna had also suffered the upset of having to close her trendy clothes store with debts of more than £248,000.

A source close to the band said: "They've realised that things aren't working and that means they've got to be apart. Jo's as upset as Guy. They've told their friends and family what's happening and the Coldplay guys are rallying round to try and keep his spirits up."

A spokesman for the band said: "I can confirm that Guy Berryman and his wife Jo have separated. The decision was amicable."

Guy is currently working on the band's next album. Joanna declined to comment.
