The Escapist

The Escapist is a hidden song on Coldplay's fourth album, which is located after Death and All His Friends and shares track #10 with it, closing the album. The song portrays an avant-garde feel by looping backwards samples, with Martin singing dreamily over the top, echoing the experimental direction Radiohead took on Kid A.

On the 24th February 2008, The Observer gave us more information on Coldplay's new album, and in particular, details of this track (suggesting it was to be included on the CD) and the new CD artwork. Here's what they had to say:

Coldplay were persuaded to write the closing credit track for new British film The Escapist, a Sundance hit. Now the band have seen and loved the film, they have decided to include 'Song for the Escapist' on their forthcoming album. I hear, too, that the record company was a little miffed at having to redesign the CD artwork to include the song on the track listing, but the band insisted and their patronage will, I'm sure, give this tough British film a boost.

The track was not, in the end, included on the official track listing, possibly due to the record company's annoyance!

The Escapist is essentially a reprise of the intro of Life In Technicolor with its own set of lyrics, differing from the lyrical Life In Technicolor II.

The song was formerly known as Song For The Escapist in early stages of the album production.

Lyrics

And in the end
We lie awake
And we dream of making our escape

And in the end
We lie awake
And we dream of making our escape
